There will be a BF – TSEK Photography Competition 2011 by the National Nutrition Council Region 7, in line with the Nutrition Month 2011 this July!

MECHANICS:

Eligibility
• There will be two categories for the contest: one for the amateur and one for professional photographers
• The contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers
• To avoid infringing the rights of any third party amateur contestants will take pictures at a specified place and date. This will be done at Baranngay Talamban, Cebu City at around 2 o clock in the afternoon. Breastfeeding mothers within the community would be the subjects of the photo.
• Photos must depict the theme “Isulong ang BREASTFEEDING: Tama, Sapat at EKsklusibo”
• Participants may use any digital or film-based camera. Entries must be printed in full colour on any brand of photo paper in 8R size (8 inches x 10 inches)
• There should 3 main photos per photo entry & no other additional inserted photos or collages.
• Digital retouching should not be used. Cropping of picture may be imployed.
• Creative effects done within the camera at the time of exposure e.g. multiple exposures, flash fill, lighting, filtration, etc. are allowed.
• The placement of identifying marks, such as names, addresses or any sign to insinuate
information about the owner of the entry is strictly prohibited.

Submission of Entries
• Each entry should be submitted in an envelope with a BF- TSEK Photo Competition entry form in triplicate (one copy attached to the photograph, one for the receiving staff, and one copy for the photographer-entrant).

The National Nutrition Council VII will launch the Breastfeeding Rally as the opening of the Nutrition Month 2011. There will also be a MOA Signing between NNC 7, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and the Local Government Unit of Mandaue on the setting up of breastfeeding stations in the workplace.

The Nutrition Month 2011 will also feature the following activities:

More than 2,500 participants attended the fifth annual Gabii sa Kabilin last May 27. This is a significant increase from the 1,800 participants last year. At the same time, the Gabii sa Kabilin featured 11 museums and seven heritage sites, which are more than the nine museums and heritage sites opened in 2010.

This year’s participating museums include the Casa Gorordo Museum, Cathedral Museum of Cebu, Fort San Pedro, Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House, Museo Sugbo, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF)-Rizal Museum, Museuo Parian sa Sugbo (1730 Jesuit House), Sacred Heart Alternative Gallery, Cebu Normal University (CNU) Museum, Cebu City Museum, and Mandaue City Central Plaza. The heritage sites include Plaza Independencia, Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño, Sacred Heart Church, Heritage of Cebu Monument (Plaza Parian), Plaza Hamabar, and Plaza Sugbo.


The Cebu City Police, in cooperation with tanods from eight barangays—Sto. Niño, San Roque, Tejero, T. Padilla, Cogon Ramos, Parian, Zapatera, and Day-as—in Cebu City, secured the routes that night. Barangays Santo Nio, San Roque, Tejero, T. Padilla, Cogon Ramos, Pari-an, Zapatera, and Day-as also provided volunteers to run information booths and drive buses back and forth selected sites.

Gabii sa Kabilin 2011 seeks to promote local museums as venues for the understanding and appreciation of Cebuano history and culture. It also aims to abolish the stereotype of museums being merely vaults for “dead objects” and instead introduce them as venues for live cultural activities.


The only one of its kind in the Philippines and even Asia, the event is also organized every year to celebrate the National Heritage Month and International Museum Day in May.

AboitizLand and Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa partnered with RAFI for this event.
That night, the activities and attractions ranged from the traditional to the contemporary. The Asian Troubadors performed at Cathedral Museum of Cebu; an arnis demonstration was performed at Fort San Pedro; a presentation on budbud kabog delicacy of Catmon was seen at the Museo Sugbo; Sandiego dancers showcased a Santacruzan cultural show in the Plaza Parian; Spanish dances by the Cebu City Children Performing Arts were shown at the Cebu City Museum; a concert by Izarzuri Vidal happened at the Casa Gorordo Museum; a Quiz Night took place at the Cathedral Museum of Cebu; fire dances were performed in Plaza Independencia; and performing arts presentation by Russ Ligtas was featured at the Sacred Heart Parish Alternative Gallery.

Gabii sa Kabilin is a program under Culture & Heritage, which is one of the five focus areas of RAFI’s comprehensive approach to elevating lives and communities, believing that a confident community begins with a strong sense of identity. The 5th RAFI Triennial Awards Public Forum (presenting the finalists of the awards) will be on Wednesday, June 15 at 11:30 a.m. at the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center (EADSC), Lopez Jaena Street, Cebu City.

The Public Forum is organized to formally present to the public the top five finalists for the two categories—Ramon Aboitiz Award for Exemplary Individual and Eduardo Aboitiz Award for Outstanding Institution—of the RAFI Triennial Awards. This is an opportunity to present the finalists, their work, advocacies, and contribution to the community.

RAFI is currently on the fifth run of the awards programs with the conferment scheduled in March 2012. After a process of nomination, screening, profiling, field validation and assessment, the awards’ independent and multi-sectoral Search Committee, composed of leaders from the public and private sectors, came up with the top five finalists for the awards’ two categories.

RAFI launched the RAFI Triennial Awards for the Visayas and Mindanao in 1996 to give recognition to individuals and institutions who committed to building a more humane, equitable, and caring society. The awards honor the men and women who, through their efforts to bring about change and improve the lives of the less privileged, reflect the philanthropic, humanitarian, and holistic ideals and values of Don Ramon Aboitiz and Don Eduardo Aboitiz.

A PEOPLE’S PETITION

TO REFORM THE ROAD SYSTEM

“Those who have less in wheels must have more in road.”[1]

To the Sangguniang Panlungsod (Bayan) of ______________

Dear Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod __(or Bayan – if municipality)

We, Children and Registered Voters of the City of Cebu, hereby declare that that we are tired of the chaos, accidents, air pollution and injustice that prevails in the road system of the Philippines. The bias of the present road system for individualized motorized vehicles has caused and will continue to cause tremendous road congestion, serious air pollution, deadly accidents, waste of space, fuel, water, and public space for the convenience of a few, at a great cost to all.

It is time to turn this around.

For this purpose, we, the Filipino People, hereby initiate this Petition to promulgate a local ordinance to reform the existing road system. We ask that an ordinance be passed to convert all existing roads within our City to favor people instead of favoring motor vehicles. After all, towns and cities were made for people, not for motor vehicles.

For this purpose, we respectfully request that the existing roads be divided longitudinally into four parts:

All-weather side-walks and pathways — 30%

Bicycle lanes — 30%

Filipino-made collective and non-pollutive

transportation systems — 30%

Greenbelts for edible gardens — 10%

The ideal situation is depicted in the image below.



An efficient and effective transportation system will provide the constituents of our good City with a healthy and orderly alternative to the existing transportation system.

To support this initiative for local legislation, we hereby submit to your good Office the signatures of the voters of our good City pursuant to Law. We are joined by our children and grandchildren — many of whom will soon be of voting age – who are the most vulnerable to the dangerous conditions of the roads and to the worsening quality of the Air.

This People’s Petition is hereby submitted pursuant to Sec. 120 to 127 of the Local Government Code (Republic Act 7160).[2] Further, Executive Order 712 (2008)[3] and Executive Order 774 (2008)[4] call for the reformation of the road system to favor non-motorized, environment-friendly, and collective transportation systems.

Thank you in anticipation of your kind and expeditious action on the matter within the period provided by Law.[5] We look forward to working with you, your planners, and legislators to flesh out the details of our proposal. We trust that this letter finds you in good health and spirits.

[3] Sec. 3 of Executive Order 712 (2008) states: The DOTC shall establish as National Land Transport Policy Framework, which shall facilitate the modernization of the land transport industry through the promotion of utility services which are environment-friendly and shall provide assistance to the land transport sector through lease-to-own programs, technical assistance, subsidies, and the encouragement of the use of alternative fuels and/or renewable energy, among others.

[4] Sec. 9 of E.O. 774 (2008) states: Task Group on Fossil fuels. – (a) To reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, the DOTC shall lead a Task Group to reform the transportation sector. For this purpose, the system shall favour non-motorized locomotion and collective transportation system (walking, bicycling, and the man-powered mini-train).

[5] Sec. 120 (b) of R.A. 7160 states: If no favorable action thereon is taken by the sanggunian concerned within thirty (30) days from its presentation, the proponents, through their duly authorized and registered representatives, may invoke their power of initiative, giving notice thereof to the sanggunian concerned.
