Unlimited call and text, mobile browsing boost Globe mobile revenues

The Filipinos’ penchant for unlimited text messaging and voice calls coupled with the growing popularity of mobile internet browsing have given a significant boost to Globe Telecom’s mobile revenues this year.

For the first half of 2012, Globe mobile revenues reached P33.3 billion, P1.9 billion higher than the figure for the same period last year. Mobile revenues account for 82% of Globe consolidated revenues which include broadband, fixed line data, and fixed line voice.

“Despite intensifying competition, our subscribers continued preference for our value offerings such as unlimited SMS and voice subscriptions as well as highly-affordable mobile browsing allowed us to sustain the growth momentum of our mobile business,” said Ernest L. Cu, Globe President and CEO.

Globe mobile data and mobile voice revenues were both up by 6% year-on-year. Mobile data revenues grew from P15.3 billion for the first six months of 2011 to P16.2 billion as of June 30 this year driven by increasing smartphone penetration and the launch of value-based data browsing plans as well as growth in unlimited SMS subscriptions. This more than offset the decline in regular pay-per-use SMS and inbound SMS revenues which was driven by the NTC-mandated reduction in access charges from P0.35 to P0.15 per SMS.

On the other hand, mobile voice revenues went from P16.1 billion for the first six months of 2011 to P17 billion for the same period of 2012 due to increase in bulk and unlimited voice subscriptions, VOIP, and roaming services which compensated for the decline in regular outbound voice and international services.

The persistent demand for the company’s customizable postpaid plans bundled with the latest and top-of-the-line phone offers, targeted rewards and loyalty program, and customer-centric design of concept stores all played a key role in the success of its postpaid brand. Today, the postpaid segment delivers 33% of total mobile revenues, up from 29% last year.

To complement the growth in the postpaid segment, Globe Telecom’s prepaid brands held steady year-on-year, with revenues at P22.4 billion, led by its mass market TM brand. All told, postpaid and prepaid subscribers totaled 31.7 million as of end-June, up 12% against last year and 2%.

Key product offers and initiatives that have contributed to the company’s strong performance include the delivery of best smartphones in the market such as the Nokia Lumia 800, Blackberry Curve 9220 and 9320m and the Samsung Galaxy S III, which all perform best with Globe Unli Surf Combo Plans.

For prepaid subscribers, Globe ALLNET25 gives them the freedom to communicate via unlimited text to all networks, 10 minutes of calls to all networks, 50 minutes of calls to Globe and TM, and 5Mb of consumable browsing, all for one day.

A study commissioned by Globe Business showed that about 50% of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) run the risk of experiencing financial or operational difficulties and may close-shop within three years. The study cited limited capacity-building in running the various facets of a business as the main reason behind the difficulties encountered by entrepreneurs.

Manny Escosa, Head of Marketing for the Small and Medium Business (SMB) segments of Globe Telecom, said that about half of the country’s small and medium-scale businesses are likely to go bankrupt or close-shop by their third year of operation.

“From those remaining, only one out of 15 will go past year 5. And the reason for such is because SME owners tend to underestimate what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur, ultimately losing everything what they have invested into the business. Most entrepreneurs have the impression that starting is a business is a mere option to working a 9-to-5-job,” Escosa explained.

Approximately 99.6% of all Philippine enterprises are micro, small and medium-scale businesses, of which about half are engaged in retail and wholesale trade. They account for about 61% of the total employment level in the country.

“Around 560,000 entrepreneurs start their business from scratch without any background. However, they underestimate the need for controlling costs, institutionalizing good processes and increasing revenue,” added Escosa, “It all boils down to being able to manage costs, getting an effective process in place and increasing revenues.”

With this daunting scenario facing start-up businesses, Escosa said that Globe SMB proactively reaches out to SMEs to help them “survive” the challenging phase of growth by creating a product portfolio which could actually help businesses address the need to control costs, institutionalize good processes and increase revenue.”

Globe boosts smartphone use in PH with affordable mobile browsing plans

Smartphone use in the Philippines is on a steady rise on the back of more low-priced internet-enabled mobile devices, giving more Filipinos access to internet surfing on their mobile phones.

According to a report from research firm GfK Philippines, the average price of smartphones in Philippines has dropped 23% from last year’s USD317 or roughly P13,000 to USD244 or a little over P10,000 this year. “Rising demand for smartphones is largely triggered by efforts of device manufacturers who are offering more affordable smartphones, as well as retailers who have started offering 0% interest programs of up to 24 months on top of other promos when selling smartphone devices,” noted Benny Villanueva, general manager of GfK Philippines.

Globe boosts Twitter use in PH with new promo

Tattoo continues to rule PH broadband market

Superior performance, value for money plans, exclusive perks

Globe Telecom promotes fair trade with environment friendly My Fair Share Eco Bags

Reinforcing its commitment to preserving the environment and supporting fair trade, Globe Telecom is giving away free My Fair Share (MFS) eco bags to all new postpaid mobile accounts opened on Earth Day, April 22.

Made from recycled and bio-degradable materials, the eco bags are part of the telecom company’s initiative to move beyond their environmental sustainability commitment which includes reducing energy, water, and solid waste footprints and harnessing and integrating “green” solutions in its operations. In 2012, Globe will lead a value-chain analysis study to assess greenhouse gas reduction opportunities and increased recyclability.

Globe is working with Gifts and Graces Fair Trade Foundation, Inc., a social enterprise which partners with non-government organizations (NGOs) to support marginalized groups and underserved communities to produce the eco bags for Globe Telecom subscribers.
