• Panel interviews will be conducted at the corporate offices of Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. in Cebu and Makati. Other non-Cebu applicants will either be interviewed in their respective schools or at the different Aboitiz Group business units.
• After the panel interview, Corporate HR will then select the top 90 delegates who will join the 2-day Summit in Cebu City. They will be notified through their designated school official. Results will also be posted on the official AFLBS Facebook account.

Sustainable City Dialogues 2012, a 5-day learning event featuring two internationally renowned speakers, Architect Senen A. Antonio, an urban design and planning expert based in the United States, and Dr. AbdouMaliq Simone, an urbanist and professor of sociology at Goldsmiths College, University of London onFebruary 6-10, 2012.   This event is organized by the Research, Program, and Organizational Development of the Metro Cebu Development Coordinating Board in partnership with the University of San Carlos-College of Architecture and Fine Arts, and other organizations. 

The theme of this event is “Creating Future Cities:  Where Do We Begin”.  As we all know, Metro Cebu is facing serious social, economic and environmental challenges resulting in declining competitiveness, quality of life, and rapid urbanization.  The goal of this event is to draw together a variety of stakeholders from government officials to planners, architects, engineers, educators, business people, NGO leaders, community members and students to engage in a constructive dialogue and strengthen the capacity of local planners on the possibilities of creating a smart and sustainable Metro Cebu.  Topics to be addressed throughout the 5-day event includes: New Urbanism and metropolitan design, livability issues, Smart Growth, city-region planning and governance, and urban sociology.

Following the launching of the sixth season of Young Minds Academy (YMA) last Jan. 21, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) is now accepting applications for the program. YMA is a youth leadership and citizenship development program of the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center (EADSC) of RAFI aimed at developing young people to become responsible and accountable leaders and proactive citizens ready to serve the public and its interests.

This is done through awareness raising, experiential education, immersion, and open discourse, among others. It is open to young people aged 12 to 20 years old. YMA was launched in October 2006 and already ran for five seasons, including a special summer edition held in 2009 for Region 8.

“Through this program, I have discovered what kind of leader I want to be. The change has started in me already. Now it’s my time to be a role model to others,” said 15-year old Jessica Therese Vestil, a scholar of last season’s YMA.

 For Sean Timothy Salvador, 18, another YMA season 5 scholar, he said that YMA taught him to use his life as a daily opportunity to become a blessing to every person he meets and help change their lives for the better.

 To join the sixth season of YMA, interested applicants must form a team of five members under one of the following categories: Generation A (17-20 years old) and Generation B (12-16 years old).

After more than five years of living in wooden houses built on bamboo stilts, the Bajaus in Puntod, Alaska Mambaling, Cebu City will soon reside in concrete, socialized houses through the Bajau Integrated Area Development Project (BIAD-P), a partnership project of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), Cebu City Government, University of San Carlos-College of Architecture and Fine Arts, Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and partners from Kortrijk, Belgium and Haarlemmermeer, The Netherlands.

The BIAD-P aims to transform the Bajaus into a progressive, self-reliant community through the process of social mobilization and community development.

BIAD-P proponents broke ground on the 140-hectare Bajau site at Sitio Puntod, Alaska Mambaling last Aug. 1. This site will house 153 Badjau households or approximately 918 individuals in Alaska Mambaling.

Cebu City officials headed by Mayor Michael Rama, Councilor Margot Osmeña, and Councilor Alvin Dizon; Consul Enrique Benedicto, honorary consul of Belgium; local government unit of Mambaling; partners; and students joined the Bajau community as they witnessed the groundbreaking, which signalled the official implementation of the BIAD-P.

In his message, Rama stressed the need for cooperation to make Cebu City more progressive. He also encouraged the Bajaus to learn the Cebuano language so that they can be better understood, thus, contribute to the unity among Cebuanos and Bajaus.

Volunteers from Cebu City’s sister cities in Haarlemmermeer, The Netherlands and Kortrijk, Belgium, who are delegates of the 21-day Multi-city Youth eXchange program, helped in the construction of two pilot quadrant houses using the Inter-locking Compressed Earth Blocks (ICEB) technology. They also participated in other activities on social and sustainable development like coastal clean-up, ICEB production, mat weaving, pearl accessories making, and boat painting. They had a four-day immersion in the Bajau community.

For her part, Ma. Christina Aboitiz, executive committee chair of RAFI, lauded the efforts and persistence of Sister Evelyn Flanagan, Presentation Sisters Coordinator, in helping the Bajaus in Cebu.

The Bajau community in Alaska Mambaling, Cebu City is among RAFI’s beneficiaries under its Grants program.

Grants is one of the capabilities in RAFI’s comprehensive approach to elevating lives and communities. Its other capabilities are Awards, Institutional Development & Planning, Knowledge Sharing & Advocacy, and Services & Facilities. This year, once again, the Aboitiz Group will be initiating once again the 6th Aboitiz Future Leaders Business Summit: Insider Look on the Best Corporate Entities in our Country Today. The Aboitiz Future Leaders Business Summit 2011 theme is “Inspiring Leaders for a Better Future.” The 6th AFLBS will commence August 19-20, 2011 at Radisson Blu, Cebu City.

The Aboitiz Future Leaders Business Summit (AFLBS) brings together the top college student leaders from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao and the top executives across the Aboitiz Group to share and learn about business and leadership.

The qualifications for the participants: Incoming third and fourth year students taking up courses in the following fields of study: Business Management, Accounting, Communications, Political Science, Information Technology, Marketing, Finance, Engineering, Psychology, Economics and Law.

Applicants must be active officers or members of any student organization and must possess excellent communication skills. They also must not have any disciplinary case inside or outside the campus.

Every year, the top 90 carefully selected college students nationwide gather to learn about business and leadership. It is Aboitiz’s way of affirming and inspiring a continued belief in the unique and outstanding capabilities of the Filipino among today’s youth.

With the theme, Inspiring Leaders for a Better Future, the Summit features plenary discussions, games, and teambuilding exercises, simulating real work and business situations. It aims to prepare each student delegate to enter the corporate world, help them realize their future role in nation-building, and inspire young Filipinos to develop renewed faith and hope in our country, encouraging them to strive for excellence in all things.

The Summit also gives the participants an opportunity to establish networks and form ties with CEOs, executives, team leaders and team members of the Aboitiz Group of Companies, as well as fellow young leaders.

After its success in planting almost 50,000 native tree seedlings in the province of cebu, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) intends to continue their environmental advocacy. As a follow-up to their Run 2 Plant for Greenin Phils. last june 25, RAFI will organize another marathon scheduled on october, dubbed as RUN 2 Take Care.

The run this time will focus on taking care of and nurturing the seedlings planted during the run 2 plant.

The 1st part has been achieved, but now the challenge is to let the trees grow. We hope that 90 percent of it will grow, said roberto aboitiz of RAFI. Isabelo Montejo of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said the crucial part now "is how to take care of the trees, their protection and maintenance."

With its environmental program involving regular province wide activities, rafi is positive that these seedlings will grow. The Provincial Government's Executive Order 3 institutionalizes the program and directs all local government units to take part in its implementation. Also the municipalities and LGUs, NGOs that joined the run2 plant will be coordinating with RAFI to ensure the monitoring and maintenance of the planted native tree seedlings.

More than 200 women benefited from the free breast and cervical screening held last June 21 at the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) and last June 25 at the Cebu Technology University (CTU).

EJACC of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) was tapped to be part of the grand outreach program dubbed “Halad sa Kapamilya” initiated by the Cebu City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and ABS-CBN at CTU.

The screening activities were organized in collaboration with the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) OB-GYN Department, VSMMC Breast Clinic, Integrated Midwife Association of the Philippines-Cebu Midwife Clinic, and Destiny Medical Fund.

Irenea Bacla-an from Consolacion,Cebu, one of the women who underwent the screening, came to avail the service to determine any abnormalities of her body and to be able to treat them as early as possible.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among Filipino women while cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women.

EJACC, which offers free breast and cervical screening every month, urges the public to undergo early detection measures—especially maintaining a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, exercise, proper hygiene, and avoiding stresses and vices—to prevent breast and cervical cancer.

EJACC is a program under the Integrated Development focus area of RAFI, addressing health issues of communities in order to create a better quality of life. Its other focus areas are Micro-finance and Entrepreneurship, Culture & Heritage, Leadership and Citizenship, and Education.

Global climate change is a widespread and growing concern that has led to extensive international discussions and negotiations. Many of the activities we do every day such as turning the lights on, cooking food, or heating or cooling our homes rely on energy sources like coal and oil that emit carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. We are taking millions of years worth of carbon, stored beneath the earth as fossil fuels, and releasing it into the atmosphere. By now the planet has 392 parts per million CO2 – and this number is rising by about 2 parts per million every year.

The world's leading climate scientists have now revised the highest safe level of CO2 to 350 parts per million. Unless we are able to rapidly return to below 350 ppm this century, we risk reaching tipping points and irreversible impacts that are detrimental to all lives existing on Earth.

One option for slowing the rise of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, and thus possible climate change, is to increase the amount of carbon removed by and stored in forests. Aside from this, forests reduce flooding, improve water quality, improve air quality, preserve and increase the diversity of plants and animals and increase the beauty of the environment.

But over the years, the Philippines’ forest resources degenerated because of massive logging activities, fuelwood gathering and charcoal making, shifting cultivation and permanent agriculture. With continued deforestation, some species are now endangered or even extinct. In fact, the Philippines is one of the biodiversity ‘hot spots’ or areas of concern in the world.

The reasons for failure in reforestation efforts are legion, ranging from technical to social issues. Poor species-site matching, inadequate monitoring, corruption and social conflict are some of the major reasons. Addressing these problems in parallel with any environmental rehabilitation and protection undertakings can significantly increase our forest cover.

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) formed the Generation, REdemption, and Expansion of Natural resources INitiatives in the Philippines (GREENIN’ Philippines) to provide effective ways to arrest degradation of forestlands with the end view of making the country greener and healthier.

About GREENIN:

The GREENIN’ Philippines is anchored on the lessons and insights gained from years of undertaking sound and viable environmental interventions. It is designed to enhance and/or maintain environmental integrity by restoring biodiversity. It seeks to develop, protect, enhance and co-manage denuded forestlands, brushlands and degraded residual natural forests. The program is expected to have more partners that will share its vision of rehabilitating the environment through the use of native trees. Moreover, in the next three to five years, there will be forest patches created throughout the Philippines brought about the initiatives undertaken by its stakeholders and partners. These forests, which shall be the future homes of wildlife, shall be carefully protected and managed to ensure a healthy population of the wildlife residing therein. It is also the hope of the Program that the Filipinos will be more assertive and responsive in addressing the important environmental issues that already have greatly affected us all.

The reforestation component of GREENIN’ Philippines deviates from the traditional tree planting activities in the country which have reportedly not reaped much success. GREENIN’ Philippines will orchestrate to make real forests in critical areas like watersheds and denuded forestlands by developing value-based capabilities of the Program’s stakeholders and partners to co-manage program implementation. Post-planting activities are performed to ensure that planted seedlings grow to become forests.

Native tree nurseries are maintained as support mechanism of the program. GREENIN’ Philippines strongly advocates the planting of native tree species as these species promote biodiversity restoration faster than exotic ones. These make GREENIN’ Philippines a different strategy from the rest.

The GREENIN’ Philippines has the Province of Cebu for its pilot area. Taking from the Cebu model, the Program shall be gradually implemented in the different regions of the country. This is to ensure that the Program will be properly managed and implemented while building up relevant lessons and best practices from those who have implemented the program ahead.

A total of 202 women benefited from two separate breast and cervical screening activities initiated by the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) last Feb. 12 and Feb. 19.

Ninety-five women were screened in Reinhard Wirtgen Memorial Hospital in Alegria, Cebu, an activity of EJACC in collaboration with the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) OB-Gyne Department held last Feb. 12.

Around 107 women were screened last Feb. 19 at EJACC located inside the VSMMC Compound. The activity was in partnership with the Integrated Midwife Association of the Philippines-Cebu Midwife Clinic and VSMMC Breast Clinic.

EJACC is a program under the Integrated Development focus area, one of the five key focus areas in RAFI’s comprehensive approach to elevating lives and communities. Its other focus areas are Micro-finance & Entrepreneurship, Culture & Heritage, Citizenship & Leadership, and Education.

A forum on breast and cervical cancer was conducted before the screening procedures.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Filipino women while cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women.

In its campaign against breast cancer, EJACC urged women to adopt early detection measures, such as monthly breast self-examination by age 20, yearly health examination by age 30, and yearly mammogram by age 50.

“Regular breast and cervical screening is very important to know and detect early stage of abnormalities and pre-cancerous growth or early malignancies of cancer,” Ronald delos Reyes, program coordinator of EJACC, said.

He also advised women to take preventive measures like maintaining a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, exercise, proper hygiene, avoiding stresses and vices, using barrier contraceptive, maintaining monogamous sexual relationships, and getting human papilloma virus vaccination.

Cervical cancer can be detected through various screenings such as pap smear, visual inspection with acetic acid, colposcopy, HPV testing, and single visit approach.

“Learning the facts about breast cancer could save lives so let us know, fight, and win,” Dr. Claudin Biodongan of VSMMC Breast Clinic said.

“Cervical cancer is preventable with early detection and treatment,” Gertrudes Calsada of IMAP Cebu Midwife Clinic pointed out.

Jocelyn Leyson, a recipient of the screening, said that she availed of the free screening, which she considers an opportunity for early cancer detection and prevention. For her, it was better to know any early malignancies and treat it rather than to shell out for expensive cancer treatment for late cancer stages.

Five months since it culminated the fourth season of the Young Minds Academy (YMA), the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) held a covenant signing and orientation last Feb. 12, which signalled the commencement of the fifth season of YMA.

During the signing held at the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center, 89 scholars representing 18 teams inked contracts that signify their willingness to fully participate in and finish the eight-month YMA program that will include experiential education, learning visits and youth exchanges, capability building, immersion, research and concept development, and conference.

The signing was also attended by RAFI President Roberto Aboitiz; his daughter, Amaya; and Maria Goolsby of the Unionbank of the Philippines. Unionbank and City Savings Bank are partners of RAFI for the YMA program.

“We’re very excited about YMA 5. It is a program for the youth who have the potentials in nation-building. Through YMA, you will be trained to be action-oriented,” Aboitiz addressed the scholars before the covenant signing.

The YMA 5 scholars went through rigorous screening process, which included an Intelligence Quotient and personality test, essay writing, team dynamics, and panel interview before they were accepted in the program.

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) introduced the refreshed RAFI to its communication partners in a launching last Jan. 25 at Casino Español de Cebu.

The event was the first of the series of external brand launches that RAFI will hold this year after the Foundation launched its brand internally last Sept. 7, 2011. It was attended by RAFI’s communication partners, including media, suppliers, service providers, and academe, among others.

The refreshed identity of RAFI manifests the Foundation’s decision to upscale its core initiatives and ensure that its more than 160 employees have a uniform and comprehensive understanding in order to bring more impact in the communities where it works.

“Because so much time has past, it was a good time to revisit our core principles, philosophy and programs. A time to insure we have a uniform and comprehensive understanding of who we are and what our vision is. The ‘Branding Project’ we have been working on for one and half years is designed to secure this alignment. I think we now have a refreshed and powerful definition of our soul and purpose as an organization, and a clear understanding of what we want to achieve.

Now we are in a position to bring this to the world,” RAFI President Roberto Aboitiz said during the launching.

The new logo introduced the Foundation also as RAFI. The shield has been sustained as a reference back to the Aboitiz family. Visually, RAFI’s new identity had been given a modern three-dimension appearance and a professional sans-serif typographic treatment.
RAFI’s new colors—Steel Blue, Ice Blue, and Saffron Yellow—reflect the professional but still warm attitude that RAFI brings in its undertakings.

“In the past, we made use of different logos, colors of uniforms, so it is not surprising that RAFI may be known in different ways. Today, we will begin to change this. Today, we will discipline ourselves to use our logo, our colors and our visual material in a consistent way,” Aboitiz explained.

RAFI has been serving the people in the Visayas and Mindanao through various programs and projects in development work for the past 44 years.

“Over time, we aim stand out even further as architects of change, as having touched people and shaped a better future. This is an exciting point in our history and a good time to position ourselves in the public eye and tell our story. Help us to bring our story—the RAFI Story—out to our recipients and partners. To continuously share the inspiring stories of the awardees and finalists of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) Triennial Awards to the public, RAFI conducted a public exposure and post awards engagement program in Davao last Nov. 20-23.

The program was composed of the RAFI Triennial Awards Xchange Series 7, a face-to-face encounter between and among the awardees, finalists, and other participants to increase awareness and understanding of the advocacies of the laureates through learning visits; 3rd Circle of Laureates Conference, which gathers the laureates to consolidate and plan their initiatives in the next three years; and 2nd Leaders of Change Forum where the laureates showcased to the public the various programs and projects they have implemented.

The laureates and some youth scholars from RAFI visited the Institute of Primary Health Care, Maharlika Foundation, Philippine Eagle Foundation, Malagos Garden Resort, Mrs. Soledad Duterte, Boystown Davao, Visayan Forum Foundation Inc., and Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center.

During their exclusive conference, the laureates drew up plans for their group, such as exploring more partnerships within and outside their circle and initiating a social movement.
The 2nd Leaders of Change Forum was held in Ateneo de Davao University where sessions on leadership, innovation, teamwork, team play, and engaging the successor generation were provided, bringing about awareness and inspiration from applied principles and approaches and paving the way for collaborating in future initiatives between the laureates and the different stakeholders in Mindanao.

Among the many individuals and institutions from the Circle of Laureates who participated in the public exposure and post awards engagement program include Upi, Maguindanao former mayor and incumbent vice mayor Ramon Piang Sr., Domingo Tadena, Brokenshire Integrated Health Ministries Inc., Institute of Primary Health Care, Glicerio P. Lucrecia, SOS Children’s Village Calbayog, and Edilberto Lantaca, Jr.

The RAFI Triennial Awards was created in 1996 to give recognition to individuals and institutions in the Visayas and Mindanao who make significant contributions to social development. It is one of the capabilities of RAFI in its comprehensive approach to elevating lives and communities. Its other capabilities include Grants, Institutional Planning & Development, Knowledge Sharing & Advocacy, and Services & Facilities.
