• Warm up, cool down and stretch - Before and after the start of any run, be sure to engage in warm-up exercises. If muscles are properly warmed up, the strain on muscles, tendons, and joints is reduced. A combination of sustained and steady stretches, not forced, is perfect to help loosen the muscles.
• Check your upper body - Make sure to maintain good posture while running by keeping your shoulders back and down and keeping your body upright. A good posture enables the lungs to expand fully and in turn, allows you to breathe deeply.
• Be aware of your breathing- Whether you’re a leisure or professional runner, proper breathing can have a significant effect on your performance. Relaxation breathing can help a runner because this type of controlled breathing eases muscle tension, helps your limbs move smoother and increases the oxygen your muscles get.
• Check your leg and foot technique - A common mistake among runners is to heel strike. Such style of running is not only inefficient, but generates sudden and large impact that in the long run affects the knees and muscles. Runners must gradually adapt to mid-foot strike by letting the toes touch the ground gently, the heel landing softly and immediately push off from the ground.

RUNNING ESSENTIALS is part of Skechers Fitness' advocacy to promote Mid-Foot Strike, proper running techniques, and a healthy lifestyle with the help of ultra marathoner Michelle Estuar and other fitness coaches and runners, covering topics such as Stretching, Leg & Foot Technique, Hydration & Nutrition, and more.

Skechers' has done two clinics already last Feb. 18 and Mar. 3 at Market! Market! and we've had a very good turn out of around 70-100 attendees! If you and your friends are also registered for Globe Run for Home (Cebu) on March 25, they will also have a booth there too! Do drop by in the Running Essentials event on the day before the run. :)

Globe Telecom helps build safe homes for the vulnerable, both humans and wildlife. Thus, proceeds from its Run4Home 2012 annual charity fun run will be donated to four organizations - two of which construct homes for disadvantaged people while the other two work to save indigenous animals from extinction.

 For this year, Run4Home beneficiaries are Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (CBCF), Gawad Kalinga, Habitat for Humanity, and Philippine Tarsier Foundation (PTF). Globe Run4Home 2012 will be held on March 25 at the Cebu International Convention Center.

"Climate change threatens human habitats and endangered species so we decided that Run4Home should fund, not just housing projects of non-government organizations (NGOs) but also environmental conservation. This year, we again partnered with GK and Habitat to rebuild homes for Typhoon Sendong victims in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. At the same time, we included CBCF and PTF so we can assist in conserving the natural habitats of flower pecker birds in Cebu and tarsiers in Bohol," said Rob I. Nazal, Globe Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Head.

For 14 years, CBCF which protects rare flora and fauna native to the province, has focused its resources on the study of Cebu's wide range of biodiversity such as the Cebu Cinnamon, Cebu Flowerpecker and Black Shama. Specifically, it has championed the critically endangered Flowerpecker, now designated as the provincial bird of Cebu, after the Foundation's research renewed interest in the region's natural heritage.

Deforestation almost wiped out Cebu Flowerpeckers. They were believed extinct by early 20th century. A few were rediscovered in patches of protected areas 20 years ago. But the latest count in 2005 showed total population stood at only 85-105 individuals.

CBCF studied other terrestrial species from reptiles and flying mammals like bats to herbs and trees. They also piloted a "warden scheme" among the forest occupants that started in Tabunan Forest, an environmentally-sensitive area in the uplands of Cebu City. At present, 14 Forest Stewards serve Tabunan while 23 forest wardens guard the Nug-as Forest in Alcoy, a fishing and quarrying town. The scheme has become a model for other forest conservation areas.

CBCF also coaches communities in areas where rare plants and animals remain so they can eke out a living without destroying the ecosystem and be guardians of their own natural resources over the long-term.

Globe Run4Home second beneficiary, 16-year old PTF, maintains a 167-hectare tarsier sanctuary, a research facility and a guest center in Corella, near Tagbilaran City to preserve the last stronghold of the world's smallest primate.

Bohol's tarsier numbers plummeted from several thousands to 700 between 1960 to late 1990's due to habitat destruction, the pet trade, hunting, tourist misinformation and malpractices as well as house cat predation. Given the tarsiers' territorial nature, each tiny mammal needs one hectare of space. Being nocturnal, tarsiers may commit suicide when disturbed at daytime. They don't breed in captivity and mate only once a year. Little else is known about tarsiers. Conservationists rated them as Data Deficient and Conservation Dependent.

However, saving the last of these endangered primates cannot prosper without a strong community base, PTF maintained. Tourists should likewise be managed and tarsier habitat should be preserved.

Gawad Kalinga, which was also a Run4Home beneficiary last year, is a long-time partner of Globe in its CSR programs. GK has built over 2,000 organized communities for the Filipino poor in 17 years. By creating a culture of caring and sharing in different sectors of society, restoring the dignity and productivity of the poor, GK aims to free 5 million families from poverty by 2024.

GK's holistic model has been adopted in other developing nations like Cambodia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Its poverty eradication approach consists of community empowerment, community infrastructure, child and youth development, health, environment and food sufficiency.

Habitat for Humanity Philippines (HFHP), on the other hand, has built over 32,000 houses for needy Filipino families nationwide for nearly 25 years. Habitat is also a strong partner of Globe and has been a Run4Home beneficiary since the activity was launched in 2009.

This May, HFHP volunteers will construct 200 homes for families affected by the recent typhoons through a simultaneous build activity in Tanza, and in Indahag, Cagayan de Oro as part of its Asia Pacific-wide "Youth Build 2012". Other flagship programs cover urban renewal, housing for school teachers, firefighters and public servants. "Peace Build" brings together citizens of different faith to construct schools, homes and develop communities.

he organization's four-year "I Build" campaign provides health, education, financial literacy and values formation to families aside from providing shelter while "Re-Build" is a full-length disaster response and rehabilitation initiative.

The 5th October Run 2011 is for the Breast Cancer Awareness for this month. What's unique about this Cebu Running Event is that it will pass by 3 Flyovers with the choice of 3K,5K and 10K distance on October 9, 2011.

The 5th October Run 2011 will have an assembly time of 5am and will begin at 5:30am at the Terraces, Ayala Center Cebu. The 5th October Run Registration Fee will be at Php250.00 which is for the Benefit of PCS-CEV Breast Clinic Outreach Program.

Dilaab Foundation is organizing a fun run entitled, "Youth for Hope, Wanna BET for Transformation?" on October 8, 2011 (Saturday).

What is Wanna BET Youth Initiative?
Dilaab Youth Initiative (a.k.a “Wanna BET? Youth” or WBY) seeks to ignite spaces of hope among the youth by challenging them to live and lead by the basics of prayer, fitness and (good) citizenship. It provides holistic formation to young people in their journey to becoming discerning, God-fearing citizens and leaders.

“BET” stands for Bible, Exercise and Tubig and is a simple effort to provide support in the youth’s journey towards personal integration. It includes text update on the Biblical readings of the daily mass and reminds them to do exercise, and drink 3-5 glasses of lukewarm water.

Last August 23, 2011, Honorary Consul to Russian Federation Armi Garcia of Sweet Alert Society, Inc., Ms. Cosette Fernandez, President, Sun.Star Publication Inc. AVP for Marketing and Ramon Isberto, Head of PLDT Media and SMART Public Affairs Group signed a memorandum of agreement for the pre-Holloween event, Spooktacular Run at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel.

Keep your potions bottled up and your tricks up your sleeves. Gather your families, friends, minions and everyone in your neighborhood – because the most spectacular (or should I say spooktacular) Holloween running event is in town.

The said event will be on October 28, 2011, a Friday prior to Holloween to give families and barkadas an early kick-off celebration for the annual freak-o-holiday.

The Spooktacular Run is made up of 3km, 6km and 10km runs. There will also be a special 1.5km race for children who want to join the fun. The runners can bring anyone – from their family to their friends. And while they are busy running in the race, their family and friends can have fun in the entertainments provided in the grounds of SM City Cebu, which is by the way the starting and finishing point of the Spooktacular Run. Part of the many treats prepared in SM City Cebu is the overall theme of zombies and plants based on the popular computer game, Plants vs Zombies.

The fun doesn’t stop there. Characters from Adam’s Family, witches, ghouls and many other Holloween characters will be seen roaming and lurking in the eerily lit venue. The runners and their families and friends are also highly encouraged to dress up in Holloween costumes.

There will also be mini events for the family like the Mad Dash contest and activities from Sweet Alert, Inc. to help educate the public on diabetes. There’s still more to anticipate in this event – and horror movies and cool bands are just a few to tap your curiosity and party sense.

So put that little red mark on your horror calendar because this is the one Holloween event you surely don’t want to miss.

There will be another upcoming Running Event by the Junior Chamber International (Cebu-Mactan Channel). This is Run To Lead by JCI (Junior Chamber International), a fun run project for the benefit of the award-winning program Read to Lead which aims to develop and improve the reading skills and habits of school students ages 10-12. Run to Lead fun run will start on September 18, 2011 (Sunday) at Parkmall, Mandaue City. Gun will start at 5 AM.

Under the program, JCI will donate books to each beneficiary school. There will be a monthly activity geared towards sustaining the intensity and the impact of the program. On the same day, same venue at 10AM, a Blood Donation Campaign in partnership with Philippine National Red Cross will be held.

Join the Liverun on August 7, 2011 organized by the Cebu GI Group, a group of gastroenterologists in Cebu to commemorate World Hepatitis Day in Cebu City. Putting its GREENIN Philippines Program’s advocacies into action, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will hold “Run 2 Plant for GREENIN Philippines” on June 25 in commemoration of the Philippine Environment Month and World Environment Day in June.

The run and plant event is organized in collaboration with the Cebu Provincial Government, local government units, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and various government institutions and corporate groups.

The Run 2 Plant for GREENIN Philippines is linked with the expanded Green and Wholesome Environment that Nurtures (eGWEN) Our Cebu Program’s environmental protection and enhancement component. eGwen Our Cebu Program is a joint development program of the Province of Cebu and RAFI with the aim of making Cebu an ideal place to live, work, play, invest and do business.

“The event has two segments, the running and the planting. This event is an approach to promote health among people by running and health of the environment by planting native tree species, thus benefitting both people and environment,” Neil Papas, program coordinator of the GREENIN Philippines Pogram, said.

The central event will be held in a 30-hectare forestland in Jaclupan, Talisay City. The area, which is within the critical Mananga watershed, shall be developed into a forest model through a co-management agreement among DENR, Cebu Provincial Government, Talisay City Government, Metro Cebu Water District, and RAFI.

Simultaneously, the other 50 municipalities and component cities of the Province of Cebu will hold the Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines in their respective jurisdictions, making the event a province-wide endeavor.

Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia has recently issued an executive order, mandating the implementation and institutionalization of the Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines throughout the province.

The Run 2 Plant for GREENIN Philippines targets to plant 160,000 native tree species simultaneously all over Cebu on the said date.

“The activity does not end on June 25. Through the eGWEN Our Cebu Program, the Cebu Provincial Government and RAFI will undertake post-planting activities in collaboration with DENR, various LGUs, partners and volunteers to ensure that the native tree seedlings planted will grow and become forests after a few years,” Papas added.

RAFI’s GREENIN Philippines Program, which stands for Generation REdemption and Expansion of Natural resources INitiatives in the Philippines Program, seeks to develop, protect, enhance and co-manage denuded forestlands, brush lands and degraded residual natural forests by planting native tree species.

Earlier, RAFI expressed support and committed its GREENIN Philippines Program to complement DENR’s National Greening Program developed under Executive Order No. 26 issued by President Benigno Aquino III last February 24.

RAFI is the only non-government organization being considered to undertake activities in support of the National Greening Program in Region 7 along with 16 government agencies, instrumentalities, and government-owned and controlled corporations.

STOP SMOKING, START RUNNING. Running is one of the best ways  to help you quit smoking.

Stop smoking, start running. That's the theme of tonight's Ungo Friday Night Run that will start at The Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu. Dubbed as 'Ungo Run' ~ "Ungo" means in the local language as Monster or relates to Night time.

Organizers are inviting non-runners, newbies, seasoned runners and smokers who've long wanted to quit the habit to attend the event, which is free and open to everyone. The event is organized by the Ungo Runners, a group that runs every Friday night on the streets of Cebu City.

Businessman and runner Richard Ho is scheduled to talk about his personal experience in kicking a smoking habit and starting and keeping a running habit.

Dr. John Clifford Aranas, an ultra-marathoner, will talk about the clinical aspect of smoking.

After their talk, the group will walk and run five kilometers inside the Cebu Business Park and finish at the Asiatown IT Park.

The Ungo Friday Night Run is open to the public. Those who want to join can just go to The Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu at 9 p.m. tonight.

REGISTRATION for the Casino Femme Run "The Empowered Series" is still on in the following locations: Parkmall, Cebu City Sports Center, and Runners Ayala. The Empowered Series Run - Cebu Leg will be on December 12, 2010 @ 5:30AM at the Park Mall, Mandaue City.

After their successful staging of their Mindanao leg last November in Davao City which attracted more than 1,600 runners, the organizers (IPI) are expecting to draw more here in the Visayas leg. With the Cebu City Sports commission's plan of regulating running events in Cebu next year since not a few are doing it for Business, Dela Merced said that they are holding running events because it is the company's core objective to pursue and promote health and wellness.

Aside from the marketing aspect, IPI Foundation also has chosen beneficiaries wherein, these beneficiaries shall receive a portion of the proceeds for the benefit or their organization's programs and projects which is also part of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility programs. One of those organization is Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.'s ALEx - Aboitiz Leaders of Excellence.

The event features the all-women 3K and 1.5K run, men's and women's 10K and men's and women's 5K divisions. The first four 10K finishers will receive P10,000, P5,000, P3,000 and P1,000 while the next six placers will get gift packs and medals. The 5K first four runners will go home with P6,000, P4,000, P2,000 and P1,000 while the next six placers will also receive gift packs and medals. All first three placers will also claim trophies.
