The Korean Film Festival this year will focus on the themes of love. Seven films will be screened on September 20-26 at the SM Mall of Asia and SM North Edsa following a huge turnout of audience at last year’s Horror Film Festival. The Korean Embassy has also expanded the film festival to include the province of Cebu. The Korean Film Festival in Cebu will be from September 28-October 1 in SM Cebu. All the films will be for free.

Under the theme “7 Different Colors of Love”, this year’s festival will feature seven films that headline some of Korea’s famous stars including singer-actor Jang Geun Suk, Cha Tae Hyun and Song Hye Kyo.

Included in the roster of films are Sworn Brothers, Scandal Maker, A Happy Life, My Dear Enemy, Hwang Jin Yi, For Eternal Hearts and Christmas in August.

The seven films that will be shown in the 2011 Korean Film Festival in the Philippines are:

“SECRET REUNION” (Starring: Kang Dong Won, Song Kang Ho). Song Kang-ho, an ex-agent of the National Intelligence Service who is very careful about his actions, is paired with Kang Dong-won, a former spy from the North. Song’s character was released from the NIS six years after the gunfight which happened in the heart of Seoul; however, both men keep their identities hidden from each other.

“SCANDAL MAKER” – (Starring: Cha Tae Hyun, Park Bo Young, Wang Suk Hyun) – Nam Hyun Soo was a very famous idol worshipped like God by teens. Though he is in his mid-thirties now, he is still one of the most sought-after celebrity in the industry and a DJ in a radio show. One of his listeners, Jung-nam, sends him letters narrating her willingness to see her father whom she never met. Her story became a hit and catapults the show’s ratings to be the most popular program. But one day, Jung-nam knocks on Hyun Soo’s door claiming that the father he hasn’t met is none other than him.

“A HAPPY LIFE” – (Starring: Jang Geun Suk, Kim Yun Seok, Kim Sang Ho, Jung Jin Young) – The plot revolves around three former members of college rock band, Volcano, who were reunited by the death of their leader. At the funeral, a young, jobless lead guitarist Gi-Young (Jang Geun Suk) suggested that they reform the band with him as the new front man.

“MY DEAR ENEMY” – (Starring: Jeon Do Yeon, Ha Jeong Woo) – Hee-Soo, who is living a miserable life as a single woman in her thirties, sets out to find her ex-boyfriend, Byoung Woon who owes her $1000. Byeong Woon is also penniless but knows that girls are willing to give him money. Hee-Soo follows him as he visits many girls for money and starts a one-day journey that will change her life again.

“HWANG JIN YI” – (Starring: Song Hye Kyo, Yoo Ji Tae) – A film based on the story of Hwang Jin Yi, the most renowned courtesan of the Chosun Dynasty. She was a beautiful, talented and intelligent young woman who has no other choice but to become a gisaeng because she was an illegitimate child. The movie shows how she used her position and her charm to gain favor from the upper class, as well as his love affair with a male servant named Nom-yi.

“FOR ETERNAL HEARTS” – (Starring: Jung Kyung Ho, Kim Min Sun, Cha Soo Yeon) -An ordinary college boy Su-young meets an extraordinary girl named Pippi on campus. He fell in love with Pippi which did not last long because the latter ended her life at a student demonstration. While trying to get over Pippi, he was hired as a tutor for a girl named Su-young. He was almost at the brink of giving up because of Su-young’s peculiar personality but something is stopping him from doing so. He soon fell in love with Su-young and bizarre things started to happen.

“CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST” – (Starring: Han Suk Kyu, Shim Eun-Ha) -The film is about Jung-won who falls in love with Da-Rim while suffering from an unnamed illness. He hides the fact to Da-Rim and tries to continue living as usual, spending time with his friends and family.

There will be another round of Indie Film Sunday. This time the Indie Film Sunday will focus on Pinoy Classics. The Indie Film Sunday - Pinoy Classics movies that will be shown are Kada Uwan(2003, 9 minutes) and Ang Bisita (2006, 9 minutes). There will be a Philippines-Russia Film Cultural Exchange Film Festival on October 23 & 24, 2010 (Saturday and Sunday) at 1 to 7:30PM, Room 106, Cebu International Convention Center. The Aim of the Philippines-Russia Film Festival is to be an avenue for a brief History of Russia: Through the KINO EYE - 100 years of Cinema. Free Admission!

DISCRIMINATING Cebuanos have begun lapping up tickets for the special showing this Saturday at SM Cinema 7 of a star-studded independent film set during the dark yet exciting martial law years titled “Sigwa: Rage of Perils and Hopes.”

Spanning four decades, the movie was brought to life as a masterpiece by Director Joel Lamangan, Scriptwriter Boni Ilagan, and a power cast led by Dawn Zulueta as Dolly, Zsa Zsa Padilla as Cita, Tirso Cruz III as Oliver, Gina Alajar as Azon, Jaime Pebangco as Rading, and their younger counterparts, Megan Young (Dolly), Paulynn Luna (Cita), Marvin Agustin (Oliver), Lovi Poe (Azon), Jay Aquitania (Rading) and the hunk Allen Dizon as Eddie, among others. The movie’s original soundtrack is by Danny Fabella, weaving the struggles and triumphs of the Filipinos in his crafted songs.

The special screenings at SM Cinema 7 starting at 4 pm is part of an international road show for the much talked about independent film recognized as the #1 box-office record holder of the prestigious Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. “Sigwa: Rage of Perils & Hopes” has been rated “A” by the Cinema Evaluation Board and is an official entry to the 2010 International Film Festivals in Brussels, Montreal and Cairo.

The road show mounted by Inno-Philip Nonpareils, Inc. (IPN), one of the select official screeners recognized by film producers, Twenty Plus, Inc. and Star Express, first showed the film in Manila last August 21 at UP Film Center. )

The Cebu leg set on September 11 (notably the birth date of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos) will be followed within the last quarter of 2010 by red carpet movie premieres in Hollywood, Las Vegas, New York City, Sydney, and Melbourne. The international road show gives the Filipinos and other nationals here and abroad the special opportunity to view this significant, world-class independent film, showing Philippine history where the youth of the 1970s, a period dubbed as the “First Quarter Storm”, put their prime and their lives on the line for the love of freedom and country.

In Cebu, there will be two screenings: First Screening at 4:00 to 5:45 PM and Second Screening at 6:15 to 8:00 PM. There will be an intermission program at 5:45 to 6:15 PM where viewers will enjoy prizes and surprises and the presence of the actor Tirso Cruz III, who garnered Cinemalaya’s acting award for his stellar performance in SIGWA. Moreover, since the event is intended by IPN as a benefit show to support the movement to FREE the 43 Health Workers, illegally arrested last February 6 in Morong, Rizal and are detained to this day, the viewers get a chance to stamp their support as well.

The Cebu screenings are organized by IPN, in cooperation with USC-STAND ALUMNI, PRO-RIGHTS, and the League of Filipino Students.
