Philippine Development Foundation (PhilDev) and Developers Connect Philippines (DevCon) to Host Entrepreneurship Camp at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City on October 5-7, 2012.


CEBU CITY, Philippines (September 5, 2012) – Philippine Development Foundation (PhilDev) and Developers Connect (DevCon) Philippines cordially invite local technopreneur groups in Cebu to submit applications for Hack2Hatch: from Hacker to Founder {h2H}. At h2H, local tech developers will receive one-on-one mentorship from the leading global entrepreneurs, learn how to present to top venture capitalists, and win seed money to fund and grow their business.

“Cebu has tremendous growth potential,” says Winston Damarillo, Chief Executive Officer  & Co-founder of Morphlabs and Chairman of the Board for Exist Software Labs, both companies either founded or holding office in Cebu. “The way it’s organized, the way the people are so entrepreneurial, the way the community is bringing up the level of skill and innovation. We’re so excited!”

Damarillo said that the Board members of PhilDev are “working on an Infrastructure for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a Framework, so that Filipinos Can Be Great."

Aside from Damarillo, top Filipino American technopreneurs including PhilDev Chairman of the Board and Tallwood Managing Partner, Dado Banatao and Sheila Lirio-Marcelo Founder and CEO of Care.com will also be supervising and advising participating groups and showcase that the Philippines’ software industry is ready for leadership in the ASEAN and the global markets.

“The message we want to relay in Cebu is that we have all these opportunities…it is time to take advantage of it now,” said the 42-yr old serial technopreneur. “We have identified the cause of poverty, which we are addressing with education. Let’s keep moving forward and build. What we have to do is build high value products in the Philippines. “

“That’s my big thing: build products designed by Filipinos in the Philippines,” Damarillo added. “So for example, Exist is a company in the Philippines that won Red Herring Asia as one of the top software companies in Asia. Morphlabs is a forerunner in the industry of cloud computing in the world. So we need more of those. There are probably more of those we just need to show that in these events.”

One of those key events is Hack2Hatch, debuting on October 5 to 7 at Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City. Around 10 startup groups with a maximum of 5 members each will receive concrete steps and real tips from Filipino technopreneurs who have had success in Silicon Valley. Venture capitalists will also teach participants pitching and presenting tips to take their existing start-ups from the local scene to global sphere.

 Other mentors will be Art Tan, Chief Executive Officer and President of Integrated
 Microelectronics, Inc., a subsidiary of Ayala Corporation, and Eric Manlunas, co-Founder & Managing Partner of Siemer Ventures. They will be joined by some special guests: investors and experts from Oracle and Google in Silicon Valley.

Hack2Hatch is part of the “Silicon Valley Comes to the Philippines,” (SVC2PH) a special 4-day mentorship and speaker series which aims to take Filipino innovation and entrepreneurship towards collective empowerment and economic development.  The weekend entrepreneurship camp is a kickstarter to PhilDev’s 2012 Economic Forum, “PhilDev Economic Forum: Harnessing Filipino Innovation and Entrepreneurship,” to be held on Monday, October 8th, at Manila Peninsula in Makati.

The whole nation will celebrate the 2012 Nutrition Month this July. With the theme “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain!”, the objectives of the 38thmonth-long observance are to: a. increase vegetable consumption as part of a healthy diet to address micronutrient deficiencies and non‐communicable diseases; b. promote vegetable gardening as a source of additional food and income; and c. increase demand for vegetables to help local vegetable farmers.

The National Nutrition Council 7 thru the Regional Nutrition Committee, the Cebu City Nutrition Council and the Media Information Network for Nutrition and Development 7 spearheads the regional celebration. Several activities have been lined up for the celebration this month. Please see attached. One of the kick-off activities is the “Vegetable Hour”- a simultaneous planting of vegetables region-wide in homes, communities, schools, day care centers, hospitals and prisons on 02 July 2012 at 8:00-9:00 a.m. This would be done in four (4) key areas including Mabolo Elementary School for the school setting, V. Sotto Memorial Medical Center for the hospital setting, Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City for the community and Operation Second Chance for prison.

The NCCA-National Committee on Dance under the leadership of Ms. Shirley Halili-Cruz in partnership with the Province of Cebu under the leadership of Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia is holding Dance Xchange 2012: The International Dance Workshop and Festival with the theme "Cultural Connectivity through Dance”. This event is the Philippine celebration of the International Dance Day and in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 154, declaring the last week of April as the "National Dance Week". Dance Xchange is also one of the banner projects of the Philippines, the Province of Cebu in particular as the ASEAN Cultural Capital for 2012. This will be held on April 27 – 30, 2012 at the Cebu International Convention Center, Cebu City, Philippines.

The Dance Xchange aims to: 1) strengthen network among dance groups in the ASEAN and beyond, 2) enhance knowledge and skills of the dancers, dance teachers and choreographers on dances of the different countries, 3) showcase the unique dances of each country to enhance cultural understanding, 4) provide venue for interaction and facilitate learning among dancers, directors, dance teachers, choreographers, and 5) harness the potential of the Philippines to be a cultural destination in Asia.

The Dance Xchange will have activities such as artists forum, dance workshops to be conducted by dance directors/ dancers from participating countries, masters classes, festival of dance performances, major concerts and cultural tours.

We would like to invite you to be a part of this dance gathering, as we work as partners in the promotion of the art of dance (meet other dance teachers and dancers from the different parts of the country and of the world.) Dance Xchange will be learning and fun.

 Rafael “Raffy” Pefianco, MPM FAAPM is a Mechanical Engineer by training and his work experiences include positions in management such as Marketing Manager, General Manager, Chief Operating Officer and President of several companies.

 He is currently the Managing Director of RMP Consultancy. Raffy is a principal speaker for seminars on Lean Methodologies, 5S, Kaizen, Warehouse, Inventory, Purchasing, Logistics, Six Sigma and Sales and Marketing. He provides in‐house seminars as well as consulting and coaching services. He is an International Trainer and has been a certified instructor trainer for several US organizations for more than 20 years. Raffy has earned an Ordinary National Diploma (Mechanical Engineering) from the Poole Technical College in Dorset, England. Search for The Outstanding Cebu City Youth Leaders" (TOCCYL 2012) Cebu is initiated by the City Government of Cebu, through the Cebu City Youth Development Commission, & Office of the Mayor. The (TOCCYL 2012), is one of the highlights of the Cebu City Charter Day Celebration this year.
