The Nutri-Chef Challenge was initiated by the National Nutrition Council 7, Media Information Network for Nutrition and Development 7 with Cebu City Nutrition Committee which was held last 23 April 2012 at the Plaza Sugbu, Cebu City. During the launch last year, during the opening of Nutrition Month celebration organized by the National Nutrition Council in Central Visayas (NNC-7) at SM City Cebu, the nutri-chef challenge is implemented at the barangay level through the barangay nutrition scholars, said NNC-7 regional coordinator Dr. Letlet Mission.

“Most of the children don’t like vegetables. This is our way of promoting the nutritious food (vegetables) among the children who are easily attracted to commercials endorsing junk food and other non-nutritious food,” said Dr. Mission.


Criteria of Judging: 
palatibilty (25%), use of nutritious ingredients (25%), originality (20%), visual appeal (15%), and ease of preparation (15%). The board of judges was composed of Ms. Josie F. Elli, Senior Science Research Specialist of DOST 7 who was also the chairperson, Ms. Trinidad R. Sumalinog, RND, Canteen Concessioner & food entrepreneur, and Mr. Marlou Almasco, Sous Chef from Golden Prince Hotel.

About Nutri-Chef Challenge: 
“Nutri-Chef Challenge” is a cooking contest designed to promote vegetable recipes among the children. The challenge involves cooking contests with green, leafy vegetables as the main ingredients. A panel of judges that includes a local nutritionist will select the top three contestants during the contest.A group of children will taste the recipes of the top three contestants to determine the winner.


Nutri-Chef ChallengeWinners: 
Ms. Regina Mercedes Lingaolingao’s Mixed Vegetable Omelet got the judges’ nod and won the coveted first prize during the Regional Vegetable Recipe Development Contest cook-off. Her winning recipe with squash, carrots, chayote, malungay and egg as main ingredients bested all the other seven finalists. She took home with Php10,000.00 cash prize and gift packs. The judges gave her and her recipe a score of 91.67%.

Garnering second place was Ms. Teresita Flordeliz’s “Sautéed Vegetables with Fish” with a score of 86.33%. Winning third place was Ms. Teresa Carabuena-Dizon’s “Vegetable Bola-Bola Rolled in Biscuit Crumbs” with a score of 83.67%. Winners for the second and third place received Php8,000.00 and Php6,000.00 plus gift packs, respectively. Consolation prizes of Php2,000.00 and gift packs each were given to other contestants.

The organizers also gave out Special Awards, namely; the Super Saver’s Award and the Children’s Choice Award. The Super Saver’s Award, an award given to the recipe with the least total cost per serving was cornered by Ms. Roxanne Charity Lingaolingao for her Creamy Mix Vegetables with Dried Dilis. On the other hand, the Children’s Choice Award, based on the recipe garnering the highest smiley points given by the 5 children judges, was awarded to Ms. Florentina Bulgado with her recipe Tortang Kapayas.

The winning recipes will be compiled into a recipe book that will be printed for distribution to beneficiaries of the government’s Pantawid Pamilya or the Conditional Cash Transfer program administered by the DSWD as a way for NNC to contribute to improved nutrition of poorest families. The recipe book will also be distributed to local nutrition workers as an IEC material for helping families improve their meals and develop healthy food intake.

The first WEALTH of a person is HEALTH. If a child is sick or is receiving poor nutrition, no matter how gifted that child is or even a genius child could no excel if one doesn't receive the right form of nutritional support. Aside from that, proper knowledge in the masses about health is also limited. This should not be the case since this is the future generation that we are talking about and they must be well supported for the future of our nation.

Truly we live in very interesting times, not only our nutrition and health are somewhat intertwined with the problems of community hygiene, education and food but also, with agriculture, environment and climate change. These issues we are facing in these interesting times cannot be solved by the same line of thought of the current generation of leaders and movers. This is where the youth must come in and help out in the problems in our community and what better way to show this by inviting young, enthusiastic students to share their creative ideas!

By partnering with more youth on this cause, the higher the chances of helping more communities become healthier and more productive.  Fifteen communities all over the country will benefit from this expansion through the social marketing programs by 15 youth teams that will all receive PHP100,000 seed money for
the implementation of their ideas.

The groups will also be flown in to Manila, with free hotel accommodation, meals, and transportation, to attend a 3-day boot camp where they can learn social marketing approaches from a pool of experts through workshops and case studies.
This year, not only is the program expanding to cover more regions, but UNILAB is also giving more focus on outcomes. The reward for the best teams will only be after they have demonstrated that their positive ideas have resulted in positive outcomes for the community.

The U.S. Embassy in Manila invites everyone to take part in our photo contest, the Sakay Na! Jeepney Photo Challenge. We invite the public to submit their best original photos featuring Philippine Jeepneys to compete for a chance to win prizes.

“We see the Jeepney as a symbol of U.S.-Philippine friendship,” said U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Robin Diallo. “The earliest Jeepneys were constructed from jeeps brought to the Philippines by the United States during World War II, but since that time, they have evolved in beautiful and creative ways.”

Jeepneys express the unique culture of the various regions of the Philippines, as they differ in style and design from place to place. Given the historical connection of the Jeepney to the United States, the U.S. Embassy is launching the Sakay Na! photo contest to celebrate this unique and colorful cultural icon.

Winning submissions will receive a Kodak Pocket Camcorder and an invitation from the U.S. Embassy to a special event. In addition, the winning photographs will be part of a special exhibit at the U.S. Embassy.

Drawing of Winners

1. A CAB representative will be asked to be present during the raffle draws.
2. There will be a BF – TSEK Photography Competition 2011 by the National Nutrition Council Region 7, in line with the Nutrition Month 2011 this July!

MECHANICS:

Eligibility
• There will be two categories for the contest: one for the amateur and one for professional photographers
• The contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers
• To avoid infringing the rights of any third party amateur contestants will take pictures at a specified place and date. This will be done at Baranngay Talamban, Cebu City at around 2 o clock in the afternoon. Breastfeeding mothers within the community would be the subjects of the photo.
• Photos must depict the theme “Isulong ang BREASTFEEDING: Tama, Sapat at EKsklusibo”
• Participants may use any digital or film-based camera. Entries must be printed in full colour on any brand of photo paper in 8R size (8 inches x 10 inches)
• There should 3 main photos per photo entry & no other additional inserted photos or collages.
• Digital retouching should not be used. Cropping of picture may be imployed.
• Creative effects done within the camera at the time of exposure e.g. multiple exposures, flash fill, lighting, filtration, etc. are allowed.
• The placement of identifying marks, such as names, addresses or any sign to insinuate
information about the owner of the entry is strictly prohibited.

Lapu-Lapu City launches the new Mr. Lapu-Lapu Pageant, a competition in search for its modern-day hero. This beauty pageant-cum-physical competition aims to crown the man who has exceptional quality and strength. In lieu of looking for the city’s newest male image, the pageant, which will be held in Lapu-Lapu from March to its April 16 Coronation Night, will also promote tourism, culture, social responsibility and environmental awareness.

The new Mr. Lapu-Lapu pageant has picked contestants who possess the required attributes of physical fitness, appeal, skill, pleasing personality and good moral character, insight and knowledge. Contestants are picked from the many who attended the four-day screening held in Brgy. Poblacion Barangay Hall with the final contestant selection at Waterfront Airport Hotel in Mactan.

The pageant is divided into two stages: the Physical Competition and the Beauty Competition. In the Physical competition, different challenges are staged to see the contestants’ physical and substantial abilities determining the makings of a modern-day hero. This stage also incorporates history and showcases Lapu-Lapu City’s beauty through challenges which will test the physical and endurance, held in islands and barangays of Lapu-Lapu. From this round, twenty-five percent of the 30-50 contestants will be chosen to continue on to the semi-finals. The semi-finalists, who will take on the Beauty Competition, will have the chance to show their personality during the Pre-Pageant night in Lapu Lapu City Auditorium. The Pre-Pageant includes giving of special awards, question and answer and naming the top 16 candidates.

The ultimate title of Mr. Lapu-Lapu will be given on April 16, 2011, at Hoops Dome in Mactan. Special Awards such as Mr. Friendship, Best in Hero Costume and Mr. Photogenic will be voted by the contestants themselves, while the awardees for Mr. Hero Personality, Mr. Physique and Mr. Popularity will be determined by the online voters via Facebook.

The finalists will get to present their Hero Plan of Action for the final stage and ultimately, the final decisions will be left to the judges. The winner will bag the title of Mr. Lapu-Lapu 2011 plus cash and gift items.

As many Filipinos know, Lapu-Lapu is considered to be the first hero of the Philippines, having defeated Ferdinand Magellan and his troupe of Spanish invaders in a battle by the beach in 1521. Over the years, Lapu-Lapu has been characterized with physical strength and a fierce love for his community and colony. As a nationally recognized figure, his story remains a staple in all Philippine history books while his shrine stands mighty on a plaza named after him in Mactan Island, Cebu.

To pay homage to their beloved hero, Lapu-Lapu City has launched the new Mr. Lapu-Lapu pageant with the aim of discovering a modern-day hero who will be the newest male image of the city. This is the first pageant in Lapu-Lapu City’s history which will showcase not only the contestants’ physical attributes but their good moral character and passion for service and action for the city as well.

Many male pageants are recognized around Cebu and the entire Philippines. What the new Mr. Lapu-Lapu pageant will bring to the table is a determined search for the modern-day Lapu-Lapu, a young man who possesses the whole package of physical appeal, skill, moral character, personality and most importantly, a desire to be a hero for the city’s culture, tourism and society. As a testament to this, each of the contestants will present a Hero Plan of Action to show their passion for serving and representing Lapu-Lapu City.

Each candidate are tasked to propose a community project; a project that they see best suites their assigned barangay. In partnership with the Lapu Lapu Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, each candidate is involved in creating strategic plans with their respective SK chairman, if feasible and approved by the SK council their proposed project shall be implanted.

Approval of the projects proposed by the candidates shall undergo feasibility and availability resource study.

In addition, all candidates shall assist their respective SK council in their existing projects and shall become the face and representative of the SK Council in gathering support from the residences of the barangays assigned to them. They shall be attending the planning stages of the projects, acting out as speakers in social gatherings and shall be the face of all tourism collaterals of their respective barangays.

Evidently, Mr. Lapu Lapu 2011 is not just a pageant showcasing the beauty of the human body, but most parts of it is focused on community service and becoming a role model to the youth as they inspire them to be the best citizens they can be.

The much talked about Mr. Lapu-Lapu pageant, which advocates strongly on the belief that there are true modern-day heroes worthy to be recognized, will hold its Pageant Night on the 16th of April 2011 at the Hoops Dome, Gun-ob in Lapu-Lapu City.

The event will highlight the pageant's past activities witholding the advocacy, and will challenge each candidate to prove themselves worthy of the title Mr. Lapu-Lapu.

Conceptualized by Dexter Alazas, Mr. Lapu Lapu 2011 will be an entertaining yet enlightening experience that will not only stimulate awareness and interest, but also encourage a deeper understanding on the history of Lapu-Lapu - both the city and the man it was named after.

Being the first pageant of its kind, the Mr. Lapu-Lapu advocacy-driven event aims to cause as much buzz as possible about the pageant to people not only in Cebu, but all around the Philippines. This will hopefully attract a larger audience; that which who are willing to become aware and willing to be educated on the true origins and essence of the pageant, the city, and the man.

The NGO that won the BBC World Challenge was from the Philippines, specifically from Bacolod City. The local Philippine nongovernment organization won the top prize at the BBC World Challenge 2010 for its perfected model of a hydraulic ram pump that has brought water to remote villages in the Philippines and other parts of the world.

The Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. (AIDFI) based in Barangay (village) Mansilingan, Bacolod City, won the top prize of US$20,000, according to Hazel Stuart, a British national based in Bacolod City.

The awarding ceremonies for BBC's World Challenge was held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on Monday. Auke Idzenga of AIDFI won the whole thing out of 800 projects worldwide. It got down to 60, then 12, then the final three. What an amazing achievement for our Philippine NGO!

Now on its sixth year, the BBC World Challenge is a global competition aimed at finding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at grassroots level.

Last November 18, AIDFI's entry "Running Water Uphill" also won the Community Initiative Award of the Energy Institute Awards held in London.

AIDFI has so far installed 170 ram pumps for about 50,000 beneficiaries. The AIDFI program centers around the locally perfected model of the old hydraulic ram pump, a device that can pump water to very high elevations without the use of electricity or fuel.

Looking forward for the Next Miss Cebu 2011!

Among the activities we have lined up for the Mandaue Business Movement 2010 is the My Business Idol 2010.

The My Business Idol 2010 will be on September 20 at CICC - Cebu International Convention Center. This year's Business Idol will feature the student entrepreneur as the idol, Cebu’s premiere colleges and universities will vie for the prize.

Recognition will be given to the successful recipients of the SMED program of the provincial government which trained municipal entrepreneurs to be successful in their line of business.

The competition will also feature guests from the MCCI - Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Entrepreneurs, businessmen from towns and possibly VCs. Cebu’s premiere colleges and universities will vie for the prize which is intended to provide them with the initial capital to launch their own business and the title of My Business Idol 2010!
