What makes your kids smile?
Chances are, the answer to this question doesn't involve the latest gadgets or vacations in far-away, exotic places. More often than not, it is the simple things in life that puts a smile on their faces: a happy Sunday morning breakfast, a hug from mom and dad or even the feel of fine sand under their feet at the beach.
Smiles are the truest expression of happiness. To commemorate Smile Month this October, Havaianas, the world’s favorite flip-flops, is launching the “Design a Smile” campaign to spread cheer and share thousands of smiles with Filipino children. Havaianas is creating a venue for children to heal the broken smiles of other children who have cleft lip and cleft palate deformities.
A series of design contests from October 16 to November 14, “Design a Smile” will give children the chance to show the world their artistic talents and, at the same time, create better futures for the children of Operation Smile, a non-profit, volunteer medical organization that provides reconstructive surgery and healthcare to kids with facial deformities.
Children from 5 to 12 years of age can participate in "Design a Smile" to lend their creativity for a greater cause. All they have to do is come to any of the events, which will be held in major malls nationwide, and design the sole of a Havaianas pair based on the theme, "What makes you smile?" Prizes from Havaianas, My Masterpiece Movement, Polaroid, Faber-Castell, KidsSports, and Orange Juice await the winners.
The top winning entry will be produced by Havaianas in a future collection and will be sold nationwide for the benefit of Operation Smile. So, this October, let your kids share their creativity and help heal the smiles of their fellow children.

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will hold a two-part series of the Understanding Choices Forum on Oct. 29 and Nov. 15 at the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center, Lopez Jaena St., Cebu City.
Dubbed as Living on the Edge Series: Climate Change Focus, these series of forums are designed to provide a venue to heighten awareness, deepen understanding, and inspire participation and action on climate change, one of the pressing issues affecting the world today.
On Oct. 29, the first part of the series entitled “Disaster-resilient Communities in a Changing Climate” will provide the participants with the knowledge on the current approaches in responding to the climate challenge—from innovating disaster-resilient building structures to building a responsive and resilient community to mitigate impacts of climate change.
Speakers of the first forum are Illac Diaz, a former actor- and model-turned social entrepreneur, urban green planner, and founder of My Shelter Foundation, and San Francisco, Camotes Island former Mayor and incumbent Vice Mayor Alfredo Arquillano.
Diaz will present his innovative design of disaster-resilient building structures that is not just green but can also withstand the harsh elements of nature consequent to the effects of climate change as well as the framework and design of a resilient community.
Arquillano will share the experience of San Francisco, Camotes Island in implementing climate and disaster risk reduction-oriented projects in the island. San Francisco, Camotes Island, Cebu is one of the 79 cities in the world that has adopted the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Making Cities Resilient Campaign.
On Nov. 15, RAFI will hold the second part of the Living on the Edge Series entitled “Climate Change and the Global Climate Change Politics,” which will highlight inputs from two international climate change negotiators for the Philippines, Atty. Antonio La Viña and Esperanza Garcia.
La Viña is the Dean of the Ateneo School of Government and Chairman of the United Nations Collaborative initiative on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation at United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conferences of Parties (UNFCC COP).
He will talk about the daunting issues of climate change and how we are affected at the recent ‘climate’ of the global climate politics, particularly on the global debates and related international initiatives and negotiations being marred with controversies from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Kyoto protocol to the UNFCCC-COP 15 in Copenhagen Denmark that ended in failure, and the upcoming COP16 in Cancun, Mexico.
Garcia, Founder of the Philippine Youth Climate Movement, Director of Global Warming & Climate Change Initiatives for the International Youth Council and Filipino Youth Delegate to the UNFCCC COP Conference will share her experience as a global climate youth leader, the initiatives undertaken by the rest of global youth leaders and the continuing challenges.
The Living on the Edge Series, which will start at 1 p.m., will facilitate an exchange of ideas, inputs, and experiences on climate change measures and advance a basic framework of action and inspire contribution towards climate change adaptation, mitigation, and disaster risk reduction.
Participants of the forum will include key people from government, civil society and the private sector. They will also include local chief executives, local planners, members of the academe, youth sector, media, business sector, non-government organizations, and other public sector organizations, among others.
The two fora are open to the public and do not require any registration fees. Participation will be on a first-come first-serve basis.

Cebu Children NGO Network (CNN) celebrates National Children’s Month

In celebration of the national Children’s Month this October, the Cebu NGO Network (CNN) will hold a one day activity dubbed “Fiesta sa Kabataan” on 09 October 2010 at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in Lahug, Cebu City.
Centered on the theme “Kung Bright Child ang Gusto, Mundo’y Ingatan Mo”, about 350 children from the residential care centers and assisted communities of the CNN member agencies are joining the celebration. The activity will commence with a prayer for the realization of children’s rights and ending of violence against them. Children will then get the chance to enjoy their rights as they actively participate in poster-making contests, games, and trivia bits. There will also be a role play depicting today’s children’s issues, relevant to the theme.
The annual observance of the Children’s Month is a continuing advocacy promoting everyone’s role in ensuring that children claim and enjoy their rights.
The Cebu NGO Network (CNN) is composed of non-government organizations based in Cebu that provide programs and services for children in need of special protection (child laborers, commercially-sexually exploited children, trafficked, neglected, abandoned, abused children and street children). CNN envisions a society where children develop their full potential and enjoy life in a secure and friendly environment. Formed in July 1994 to monitor the implementation and compliance of the government to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN-CRC), the CNN continually advocates for changes in laws and policies appropriate for children at the local, national, and international level. CNN also believes that gender issues have to be addressed alongside children’s issues.
In lieu of their participation in the CNN activity, support from corporations shall be generated in cash or in-kind for the food (snacks and lunch) of the 350 participants, and prizes for the games and on-the-spot poster-making contest.

RAFI, VSMMC holds active breast screening

Aboitiz Cancer Center of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. and the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center last Aug. 28. The screening benefited 62 women in Cebu City. |
The screening benefited 62 women living in Cebu City, particularly in Barangays Labangon, Buhisan, and Budlaan.
Breast screening is one of the programs of EJACC in the promotion of early cancer detection and prevention. Another program is the Moonwalk, which EJACC will hold on Oct. 23 to promote the importance of observing monthly breast self-examination for women aged 20 and beyond.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Cebuano women, based on the Cebu population-based Cancer Registry of RAFI. From 1993 to 2007, Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of RAFI recorded a total of 3,005 reported breast cancer cases in Metro Cebu.
General risk factors of breast cancer include being a woman and aging. Some specific risk factors are family history of breast cancer, first menstrual cycle before 12 years old, menopause beyond 55 years old, never having children, and having first childbirth after 30 years old. But 70 to 80 percent of breast cancer cases have no identifiable risk factors other than being a woman and growing older.
EJACC cautions the public to be wary of the warning signals of breast cancer, including a mass or lump in the breast, change in the size or contour of the breast, a bloodstain or clear fluid discharge from the nipple, and redness of the skin on the breast or nipple, among others. These changes may be detected during breast self-examination.
To detect breast cancer early, an individual is advised to undergo monthly breast examination by age 20, an annual health worker examination by age 30, and a yearly mammogram by age 50.
Ronald delos Reyes, program coordinator of EJACC, said that the special time to do breast self-examination is five to seven days after menstruation for menstruating women, and the first or last day of the month for menopausal women.
EJACC is the one of the programs under the Integrated Development focus area of RAFI, which addresses the foundations needed to enhance quality of life and community. Its other focus areas are Micro-finance & Entrepreneurship, Leadership & Citizenship, Culture & Heritage, and Education.

RAFI, The Walk to hold Moonwalk for breast cancer awareness
The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will hold the 7th annual “Moonwalk: A Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness” on Oct. 23, in observance of Breast Awareness Month in October.
Moonwalk, a unique advocacy campaign of RAFI held every full moon of October, aims to promote the importance of observing monthly breast self-examination for women aged 20 and beyond.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Cebuano women, based on the Cebu population-based Cancer Registry of RAFI.
From 1993 to 2007, Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of RAFI recorded a total of 3,005 reported breast cancer cases in Metro Cebu. EJACC found a continuous increase of breast cancer incidence in Metro Cebu over the past 10 years, caused by lifestyle and health-related factors.
EJACC, which is organizing the Moonwalk, is expecting more than 1,500 participants in the upcoming activity.
The assembly area for this year’s Moonwalk will be at the Cebu Business Park near Pag-Ibig Fund Tower at 5 p.m. Participants will walk to the Asiatown I.T. Park where a short program will be held.
Moonwalk is open to the public.
The major partner for Moonwalk is The Walk in Asia Town I.T. Park (AITP). The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will hold the 7th annual “Moonwalk: A Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness” on Oct. 23, in observance of Breast Awareness Month in October.
Moonwalk, a unique advocacy campaign of RAFI held every full moon of October, aims to promote the importance of observing monthly breast self-examination for women aged 20 and beyond.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Cebuano women, based on the Cebu population-based Cancer Registry of RAFI.
From 1993 to 2007, Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of RAFI recorded a total of 3,005 reported breast cancer cases in Metro Cebu. EJACC found a continuous increase of breast cancer incidence in Metro Cebu over the past 10 years, caused by lifestyle and health-related factors.
EJACC, which is organizing the Moonwalk, is expecting more than 1,500 participants in the upcoming activity.
The assembly area for this year’s Moonwalk will be at the Cebu Business Park near Pag-Ibig Fund Tower at 5 p.m. Participants will walk to the Asiatown I.T. Park where a short program will be held.
Moonwalk is open to the public.

PHOTOGRAPHIC images captured by the country’s leading lensmen and Russia’s top photographers will be put on display in the Philippine Russian Photo Exhibition come Oct. 21-24 at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City.
The Photo Exhibit dubbed “Philippines and Russia inSights,” which is among the major components in the 2nd Philippine Russian Business Forum (PRBF), will serve as an educational point of exchange of cultural and psychological backgrounds of both countries.
“We hope the Photo Exhibition will help us expand trade and commercial relations by increasing understanding between Russia and the Philippines,” said honorary Russian Consul Armi Lopez Garcia who is also president of the organizing Philippine Russian Business Assembly Inc. (PRBAI).
Organizers dubbed the exhibit “Philippines & Russia inSights” as “insight”, in marketing, means a deep understanding of the target consumers’ attitudes and beliefs, leading to the achievement of the objective.
“To make business with foreign traders, you need to understand their culture, psychology, and way of thinking,” 2nd PRBF working committee on culture member Tania Arkhangel’skaya said. “That’s what we hope to accomplish through this Photo Exhibition – to make Filipino and Russian businessmen understand each other, know more about their countries, their culture, art, and etc.”
Leading the cast of Filipino and Russian world-class photographers who have already signified their participation in the exhibit are Bob Lim, Jan Gonzales, Alexander Efremov, Evgeniy Globenko, Konstantin Kokoshkin, and Nick Degtyarev.

‘Art Talk’ with Gregory Pototsky

ART students and art enthusiasts are set to have a once-in-lifetime experience this month when celebrated Russian painter-sculptor Gregory Pototsky makes a bust sculpture right before their very eyes.
This was announced Tuesday by honorary Russian Consul Armi Lopez Garcia, who just arrived from Russia and confirmed Pototsky’s visit to Cebu for the Philippine Russian Art Show.
The Philippine Russian Art Show is among the major components of the 2nd Philippine Russian Business Forum and Exhibition on Oct. 21-24 at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.
Dubbed “Art Talk with the Master,” Pototsky will give students a lecture on sculpture while making a bust of the late Jesus P. Garcia Sr., father of the Akademiyang Bisaya.
Pototsky, according to Consul Garcia, will be accompanied by his lovely wife Ms. Olga in his Philippine tour .
Nude white-on-white paintings of the famous Russian artist will also be displayed in the Art Show along with the works of selected local painters and sculptors led by Jojo Sagayno, whose winning entry in the Philippine Art Awards will be mounted on an easel for public viewing.
Also tapped to exhibit their contemporary art pieces are Cebuano painters Wenceslao “Tito” Cuevas, Vidal “Ondo” Alcoseba Jr., and Dennis “Sio” Montera and sculptors Florence Cinco and Fr. Jason Dy.

RAFI joins 1st Dia del Galeon Festival

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) joins the celebration of the 1st Dia del Galeon Festival in the Philippines organized by the Baler 400 Steering Committee and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
The Dia del Galeon Festival is held every Oct. 8 in commemoration of the galleon trade between the Philippines and Mexico that took place between 1565 and 1815. One of the most important trade routes in world history, the Galleon Trade connected Asia with Europe, the Americas, and Africa and was a vessel of cultural transmission.
One of the activities of the Dia del Galeon is the Viaje del Galeon, a commemorative event that reminds the public of the important role of the Galleon as a link in the international trade and as a cultural highway among people touched along its route.
Viaje del Galeon will be held on Oct. 8 to 11 with a cruise from Manila to Cebu then back to Manila. The cruise will feature lectures and activities to around 300 youth participants about the importance and contributions of the Galleon on the spiritual, cultural, and economic developments of the different islands in the Philippines.
RAFI, in collaboration with various partners, is contributing its culture and heritage capability to the activities of the Viaje del Galeon-Cebu leg.
The Viaje del Galeon-Cebu leg will start when the youth leaders arrive by SuperFerry 20 in Cebu on Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. in Pier 6.
A motorcade, bringing the Our Lady of La Paz-Antipolo, the patroness of the Galeon, will begin from the port area to the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral where a mass will be held.
A welcome dinner will be hosted by the Cebu City Government in the Fort San Pedro grounds. Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and Margarita Osmeña, head of the Cebu City Committee of Tourism and Cultural and Historical Affairs, are expected to be present during the dinner.
The delegates will be treated to a night city tour to the famous heritage landmarks of Cebu.
On October 10, the participants will join the motorcade bringing the Our Lady of La Paz-Antipolo, to the St. Joseph’s Parish in Mandaue City. After, they will head straight to the Bantayan sa Hari where they will be welcomed by the staff of the Mandaue City Tourism Office and be treated with Mandaue City’s famous delicacies.
A tour to some of Cebu’s heritage museums like the Casa Gorordo Museum, University of Southern Philippines Foundation-Rizal Museum, Cathedral Museum of Cebu, and 1730 Jesuit House will follow.
The delegates will then board the SuperFerry 20 at 5 p.m. to go back to Manila.

Pink Glamour for Kids
October 17 – 10am – 7pm – Activity Center – Kids get free nail art, hair braid, and do exciting crafts by presenting a minimum receipt and one hundred peso donation to get a pass. A Kids Fashion Show culminates this activity.
Pink Cocktails & Concert by Nina
October 22 – 7pm – The Terraces – Sumptuous food and entertainment by the country's soul siren to raise funds for cancer foundations.
Moon Walk
October 23 – 5pm – The Terraces –The Pink trail will start at the Terraces and will end at The Walk in Asia Town I.T. Park.
Think Pink 2010 ends with a bang as Think Pink Rocks marks the culmination of the month-long celebration at the Open Parking across The Walk at 7:00 pm with Cebu's top bands and musical acts that will surely rock the night away.

The Halloween Trick or Treat at Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort will be on October 31, 2010 Sunday at the Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort with the Registration opening at 1:00PM. The First 30 Kiddie registrants get a halloween lott bag!
