Centerus, Inc., a software engineering company from Washington State, USA, will be giving a seminar on Design Patterns in Cebu City on June 23, 2012 at the Golden Prince Hotel.

This one-day seminar will be from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and aims to help software design engineers in the Philippines improve their efficiency and productivity in programming at least threefold.

“Object-oriented programming skills are in high demand worldwide, despite the economic downturn,” said Carlos Tapang, Centerus, Inc. president and speaker at the upcoming seminar.

“Programmers in Cebu and the Philippines already possess very good programming skills.  Most of them have learned the rudiments of object-oriented programming in college. However, what you learn in college is never enough, and object-oriented programming presents a steep learning curve to most software developers.

This seminar is designed for developers to internalize a few design patterns in a single day.  I believe Design Pattern skills are crucial to one’s career in programming.”

Design Patterns are pre-determined patterns that have been found to result in more modifiable designs, making them easier to maintain and comply with ever-changing requirements.

“Design Patterns represent a watershed in software engineering,” Tapang explained.  “Until now, even with object-oriented programming, software systems built using traditional design principles are ‘brittle’ - prone to fail if changed.  We will be discussing some of these patterns, how these patterns came about, and how to master them.”

The Design Patterns seminar will cover the following topics:  what design patterns are; the vocabulary of design patterns; differences between good and bad design through specific design examples; useful creational patterns; useful structural patterns; useful behavioral patterns; threading and concurrent patterns.

The seminar is intended for software design engineers and programmers familiar with object-oriented programming, and will equally benefit freelancers and corporate employees.

“We are also inviting software engineers and programmers to send us their design problems in advance.  We plan to tackle some of their actual problems during the seminar, so that everyone can relate to the concepts being discussed,” Tapang continued.

Seminar fee starts at P2,950.00 and can go as low as P2,400.00 for group registrations.  Rates already include seminar materials, buffet lunch, morning and afternoon snacks.

Carlos Tapang, the resource speaker for this seminar, is the president of Centerus, Inc.  He has gained both depth and breadth of experience in software design engineering. He has worked for large companies in the USA (namely Intel and Microsoft), and has done extensive consulting work for startup companies.

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) Kool Adventure Camp (KAC) offers a kayak program that aims to develop and enhance leadership skills. The program is open to both corporate professionals and youth groups.

“This is not just a recreation program. This is a leadership development program using kayak as a tool. With all the beautiful and rich marine biodiversity and potential islets in Cebu, there is no reason for us not to have this kind of water activity,” Anthony Terence Ocampo, KAC deputy director for Professional Programs, said.

A kayak program will last for three to four days, wherein participants will be navigating and paddling to the sites covered by the route, like the islands of Olango, Pandanon, Caohagan, Banakon, and other islands between Cebu and Bohol.

The program will test the endurance, patience, teamwork, and communication and planning skills of the participants, as well as how they respond to changes in the environment.


The 52 tandem kayaks donated by Outward Bound Singapore will be utilized in the kayak program, which is preferably conducted during the second or third quarter of the year to avoid bad weather conditions such as typhoons and monsoons.
The head facilitators of the kayak program are Ocampo and Sheerene Abrea, KAC Professional Development Programs facilitator, who are both certified with Kayak Coach Level 1 by the Singapore Canoe Federation.

To ensure the safety of the participants, the KAC facilitators conduct Risk Assessment and Management System (RAMS) before every expedition. They follow operating procedures and standards from medical to rescue and program design, which are internationally benchmarked.

The program’s pilot group is RAFI’s Micro-finance team, who kayaked from Om Shanti, Cordova to Shalala Beach, Pangan-an and Caohagan Island last July 14-17, 2011.

“The program helped strengthen our teamwork as we cooperate with each other and focus to reaching our destination. I felt secure with several colleagues who know how to handle the kayak and the KAC team boat that followed us along the way,” Nineveh Mascariñas, finance supervisor of RAFI Micro-finance, said.
KAC is one of the programs under RAFI’s Leadership & Citizenship focus area, where future leaders are nurtured to prepare them to take an active role in affecting change. RAFI’s other focus areas are Integrated Development, Micro-finance & Entrepreneurship, Culture & Heritage, and Education.

KAC is currently building the Philippines’ first outdoor experiential center at Barangay Cansomoroy, Balamban Cebu, which is set to open in 2013.

Globe Telecom, Inc. recently signed an agreement with the Philippine Dealing and Exchange Corp. (PDEx) to list its P4.5 billion five-year and P5.5 billion seven-year fixed rate bonds due 2017 and 2019, respectively. The retail bonds will be listed on June 1, 2012 and will immediately thereafter begin trading in the corporate securities market of PDEx.

“We look forward to listing our latest retail bond issue with the PDEx. This will allow our investors to enjoy increased liquidity and transparency as they are able to see the best market prices,” said Alberto M. De Larrazabal, Globe’s Chief Financial Officer.

Taking advantage of the favorable interest rate environment, Globe is issuing the bonds to help fund the Company’s ongoing network modernization and IT transformation program, as well as finance other capital expenditure requirements for the year. Globe’s retail bond issue obtained a rating of PRS Aaa from Philippine Rating Services Corporation (PhilRatings), representing the highest rating available with the smallest degree of investment risk. The five-year bond, which has a term of five years and three months from issue date, and the seven-year bond have coupon rates of 5.75% and 6.00%, respectively.

Globe ended the first quarter of 2012 with conservative gearing ratios with gross debt-to-equity ratio at 1.09:1 and gross debt-to-EBITDA ratio at 1.48:1, well within its debt covenants of 2:1 and 3:1, respectively. Consolidated service revenues for the period surged to an all-time high of P20.2 billion with broad-based growth, while core net income stood at P2.7 billion.
