Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Program 2012


Plot your green plan and chart your course to Germany!! If you are a Filipino college student between 18 to 24 years old, with a passion to make a difference through an environmental project, you can be one of the 2012 Bayer Young Environmental Envoys.

The Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) is the longest running environmental program in the Philippines, organized in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). For twelve years now, BYEE has been engaging young Filipinos to take part in environmental protection.

If you are selected as one of the 12 Bayer Young Environmental Envoys, you will have the unique experience of enriching your knowledge about the environment through a live-in BYEE Eco-Camp to be conducted by environmental experts to be held at an eco-friendly venue in the Philippines in August 2012.

The top four BYEEs will represent the country and join youth delegates from 17 other countries on a weeklong all-expense paid study tour of Germany on November 4-9, 2012. The tour will provide first-hand experience on how environmental protection is practiced by people, government and industry in a country that leads in technology and environmental awareness.

Who are eligible?

  • Filipino citizens, 18 to 24 years old by August 1, 2012 
  • College students, enrolled as of March 1, 2012, or planning to enroll by June 2012, in any CHED-recognized institution 
  • Students graduating by March 2012 are not eligible to join 
  • Applications from incoming first year college students will be accepted, subject to proof of college enrollment by June 2012 
  • For students presently enrolled in college, must have no failing mark in his/her college studies; for incoming first year college students, must have no failing mark in his/her high school studies 
  • Actively involved in environmental activities/projects 
  • Of good moral character, willing to travel overseas, and should be able to work well within a group 

Children and relatives up to second degree of consanguinity, or persons, whether they are related or not, living with any of the following are not eligible to join the contest:

  1. Employees of Bayer Philippines, Inc. and Bayer Crop Science, Their agencies or interdependent contractors engaged in the project. 
  2. Individual companies engaged in the development, production or distribution of materials for the project. 

How to join?

  • In no more than 1,000 words, write your individual proposal for a simple and do-able environmental project in your community or school that addresses a specific environmental problem. 
  • Identify and describe a current situation with environment-related problems in your community or school and the relevance of addressing this concern. 
  • Name a few practical solutions to the problem that either government/industry/NGOs or your school/community has so far carried out. 
  • Draw up a personal project you intend to do to help address this problem. State the objectives of your project and your deliverables. (What specific output/s do you intend to achieve?) 
  • Indicate your resource requirements like budget, manpower, facilities, as well as institutions/groups/organizations involved, making sure that all necessary resources are within your reach. 

Implementation of all the projects that will make it to the final round must begin not earlier than April 30, 2012 and end not later than July 31, 2012.


Procedure / Rules 

  • Fill up the entry form and attach a 2X2” color photo of yourself. 
  • All entries must be accompanied by a project proposal. Incomplete application forms and entry requirements will not be processed. 
  • Secure the endorsement of a faculty member or anyone of the following: the school academic department head; college dean; academic vice president or president. 
  • All applications should reach Bayer by March 9, 2012. 
  • Project proposals must be typewritten in English and double-spaced. 
  • Before end of April 2012, shortlisted candidates will be required to submit the following: 


    1. Soft copy of the proposal 
    2. Proof of awards received 
    3. College transcript of records 
    4. NSO-certified copy of their birth certificate 


  • Project proposals which are adaptations/upgrades of already existing projects are acceptable, but the entry will be judged solely on the basis of new elements introduced and their added value. Pre-existing work or accomplishments prior to the official start-up date will not be given any credit. 
  • Successful finalists shall be asked to begin implementing their respective projects by April 30, 2012. A premature start-up of the proposed projects will be grounds for disqualification. 
  • While the project proposal should be the applicant’s own concept, the project itself may be carried out by any number of people, with the applicant taking a significant role in its implementation. 
  • The project must be completed by July 31, 2012. 
  • The judge’s decision is final for all aspects of the competition. 
  • Due to difficulty of the passport application process, finalists will be required to apply for their own passport as early as May 2012. 

Judging and selection 

  • Applicants will be short-listed based on project content, leadership and environmental know-how and involvements. 
  • A panel of judges will interview each of the short-listed candidates to determine their intelligence and understanding of environmental issues, their communication and people skills, and the feasibility of their project proposals. 
  • Short-listed candidates from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will be interviewed in Metro Manila, Iloilo, and Davao, respectively. Bayer Philippines, Inc. will bear all costs for the travel, meals, and accommodations of short-listed candidates going on the interview. 
  • Successful finalists will be required to attend an environmental live-in workshop called the BYEE Eco-Camp in August 2012. All charges for the travel, accommodations, and upkeep of participants will be shouldered by Bayer Philippines, Inc. 
  • At the end of the Eco-Camp, the 12 finalists will be asked to make a presentation before another panel of judges. They will be given the formal title of Bayer Young Environmental Envoy during an awarding ceremony in August 2012. 
  • The Top 4 BYEEs and will be given the opportunity to participate in a weeklong all-expense paid study trip to Germany on November 4-9, 2012.
