TV5 and its sports and news platforms—sports channel AKTV and 24/7 news channel Aksyon TV—join Cebuanos in celebrating one of the country’s grandest and most colorful religious events, the Sinulog Festival, happening in the whole province of Cebu simultaneously this week.

The Kapatid Network and its affiliate platforms roll out week-long activities to make the festivity even more meaningful to the Cebuanos via “Sugod mga Kapatid sa Sinulog 2012,” kicking off with the participation of United Football League (UFL) at the 2nd Cebu Sports Commission Football Championships that happened last weekend (January 7 to 8). UFL players such as Mark Hartmann, Misagh Bahadoran, Jose Paolo Pascual, Nestorio Margase and Lexton Moy were warmly received by Cebuano football fans during the event at San Roque and USC football fields. (The UFL series of games starts on Saturday, January 14, on AKTV on IBC) TV5 also holds daily open TV viewing marathon at Fuente Osmeña Circle from January 9 to 12, 1 to 5pm, featuring shows like Glamorosa, PS I Love You, Pinoy Explorer and Talentadong Pinoy.

The country’s most awarded and biggest talent show, Talentadong Pinoy, is slated to hold auditions at Fuente Osmeña Circle on Thursday (January 12) from 4 to 5pm.

TV5 also hosts “Sugod mga Kapatid sa Sinulog Show,” a gathering of the brightest Kapatid stars such as Ruffa Gutierrez, Wendell Ramos and Edu Manzano on Thursday, 5 to 7pm. Running has become a national pastime in the Philippines. Paintings and sculptures of contemporary Cebuano artists were featured in the art exhibit, dubbed Contemporary Cebu, which opened last Jan. 4 at the Cebu City Museum. The exhibit, which is curated by JV Castro, is designed to bring national attention to contemporary Cebuano artists and their works. It is open to the public until Jan. 31.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, during the opening ceremonies, lauded the initiative undertaken to make the exhibit possible, saying it is a way to recognize Cebuano talents in visual arts as well as to promote the Cebu City Museum.

The Alternative Contemporary Art Studio, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), and The Grove by Rockwell, partnered together to launch this annual exhibit. The first exhibit was held in June 2011 in Manila at the Ateneo de Manila University and Picasso Boutique Hotel.


This year’s Contemporary Cebu art exhibit features the works of Palmy Pe-Tudtud, Marvin Natural, Kidlat of the Junks Collective, Karl Roque, Sio Montera, Ritchie Quijano, Vidal Alcoseba, and Tito Cuevas. Russ Ligtas will give Butoh performances on Jan. 12 and 13.

"It is an exhibition that features some of the finest artists we have in Cebu. All the works in the exhibit are done by Cebuano artists who specialize in contemporary works, meaning the portrayal of subjects are different. In a way, we want to promote Cebu in a different light,” Castro said.


Dennis “Sio” Montera, one of the participating artists shared the inspiration and stories behind his paintings.


“My art is more on expression of the things that have been relevant in my life—happiness, sadness, loss of loved one, any life experience. For me, the best way I can communicate or deal with my emotions is to paint. It is more likely the reflection of a current situation of my life. It's like a diary, mirroring what is happening around me,” he said.

Alternative Contemporary Art Studio and RAFI have been partners since Contemporary Cebu’s inception in 2011. This year, they took in The Grove by Rockwell as a major partner. The other sponsors of the exhibit are the Cebu City Government, Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission of Cebu City, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Blue Shield Risk Management, Gothong Southern, Michelangelo Pizzeria, and Hola España.

“Contemporary Cebu is a good opportunity for introducing the Cebuano audience to contemporary arts and for them to be familiar who the Cebuano contemporary visual artists are," said Dr. Jocelyn Gerra, executive director of Culture and Heritage of RAFI. Cebu is now preparing for one of the biggest festivals in the country, the Sinulog festival. The mardi gras is an invitation to everyone from various parts of the archipelago, and even across the globe to come and visit Cebu, the gateway to the fiesta islands.

After a decade of partnership, Ayala Center Cebu and Cebu Holdings Inc. once again join Cebu City Tourism Commission for the 11th year of Balik Cebu Program. The Balik Cebu Program aims to offer tourists an unparalleled Cebu experience.

With many tourists arriving in the city everyday to join in the Sinulog celebrations, Ayala Center Cebu has set up the Balik Cebu Booth at the Level 1 of Paseo Marina. Open during mall hours starting January 6 to January 14, the booth will serve as an information center for the coming Sinulog events. Tickets for some Sinulog events such as grandstand passes for the Sinulog Grand Parade and Balik Cebu Dinner Party will be available at the booth as well.

In line with the Balik Cebu Program are various events such as a the Grand Fiesta MallWide Sale on January 6-16 , exhibits, parties and celebrity tours to be held at Ayala Center Cebu in the following week up to the much-awaited Sinulog weekend.

For the 6th year in a row, Crinnovent Corp., a Cebu-based events and marketing company, organizes the highly successful Christmas Nights Bazaar event. This year’s event is being held at Block 11 of Asiatown I.T. Park, at the parking lot across The Walk and Skyrise 3 Building, and is ongoing until December 27, 2011.

Christmas Nights Bazaar is a night market concept first introduced by Crinnovent Corp. in 2006 at Banilad Town Centre.

“When we organized the first Christmas Nights Bazaar event 6 years ago, it was the first night market concept in uptown Cebu.  We were simply hoping that the Cebuanos were ready for an upscale night market shopping experience,” said Jodie Lynn Soontit, Crinnovent’s project manager.

“Happily, it turned out that Cebu was more than ready and we are very glad to be able to provide Cebuanos with this alternative shopping destination.”

Due to its continued growth in terms of exhibitors and customers, the bazaar has been moved to Asiatown I.T. Park since 2009 to accommodate more participants.

“Asiatown I.T. Park has a much bigger area to offer, and also sits at the heart of Cebu’s current night life, drawing many visitors every night.  The numerous BPO employees in the immediate area are also an attractive market for those participating in the bazaar,” Soontit continued.

Bigger companies have started joining the Christmas Nights Bazaar, accepting that this is where their target markets can be found during the Christmas season.  Some of this year’s corporate participants are Dranix Distributors, SEA Olympus Marketing’s Techni-Ice, Chevrolet, Yamaha, Citi Souvenirs, and Leylam Shawarma.

Aegis PeopleSupport is a gold sponsor of the event.  “Aegis wants to build a stronger brand and to attract more qualified applicants to its company.  They believe our bazaar can help them do that and we are working with them to achieve those objectives,” Soontit explained.

Bronze sponsors are Hero Sausages and Virginia Foods, Inc., who both also seek to build stronger brand names through their presence at the bazaar.

 However, most of the exhibitors remain micro-entrepreneurs.  “Micro-entrepreneurs need lower-cost platforms to be able to showcase their products and engage in a retail business.  Our bazaar provides them with that,” Soontit said.

And since the owners are directly hands-on with overhead kept at a minimum, they are able to offer their products at much lower prices than other stores.  This allows our shoppers to haggle for their goods and helps them stretch their budgets for the Christmas season.”

This year, the bazaar has over 100 exhibitors and is offering more variety.  Garments and accessories being sold come from the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, and USA.  There are also numerous gift items, customized giveaways, toys, export overruns, exotic foods, and even LED shirts.
