Kanser-Skwela Launch and Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko Foundation, Inc. Cebu 18th Founding Anniversary



The Kanser-Skwela Launch and Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko Foundation, Inc. Cebu 18th Founding Anniversary last November 29, 2010 at the Chateau de Busay, Cebu City, Philippines.

On its 18th year, Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko Foundation, Inc. jsut recently launched Kanser-Skwela, a home-based alternative learning system for children with cancer specifically those with leukemia. Children who were forced to stop their studies because of chemotherapy for cancer are given hope with the launching of Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko Foundation, Inc.-Cebu's "Kanser-Skwela".

The Foundation has currently 57 children, 29 of whom are cured and 28 are still on chemotherapy. Of the 28 children on treatment, 15 don’t have formal education and 7 had to quit school as they undergo the rigors of chemotherapy.

The foundation's program is conducted in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and aimed at providing education to children with cancer who have to drop out of the formal educational system.

Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko (I am my brother’s keeper) is a public service program aired every Saturday morning from 6:00am–6:30am by GMA7 Network. The show is recognized as the longest-running public service program in Philippine television.

Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko was originally broadcasted and was launched on GMA7 Network on December 1, 1975, by its original hosts, Rosa Rosal (Philippine National Red Cross Governor), Hon. Orly Mercado PhD (later Senator and Department of National Defense Secretary), at GMA network. Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko advocacy is helping thousands of indigent patients, in the entire country, and now mostly around Metro Manila, all of whom are in urgent need for medications, and even, surgical operations.

Cebu City Councilor Margot OsmeƱa, president of the foundation, said it has been a wonderful journey for the foundation when one looks back at its achievements since they started 1992. She said that it is not going to be possible without the help of all the volunteers. She hopesfor the cooperation and continuous support, blessings, from the local governments of the city and province, the foundation will be able to help more children.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama was also present in the event and said: "We have a gift of life, don't waste it, share it, show your care, and show your love. You don't exist alone, we exist with each other. If the reward is not here, for sure it's up there."
